How to prepare for German licence (führerschein) theory test?
So, After living in Germany for 5 years, I decided to get my auto driving licence (führerschein). Just had my theory exam and aced it with zero wrong answers!
While preparing for theory exam I could not find a post that described how to prepare for theory test. While there are several blogs that describe getting the overall process concerning registration and documentation, I could find the tips and tricks for preparing for the test. So, I decided to give it a shot after passing my theory test.
This post assumes that you know the basics and registration process. If not, please get the general overview on other blogs.
General Info on theory test:
As I write my test in March 2019, theory test for Driving class B (vehicles up to 3.5 tons) contains 30 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions). Each question has 2 to 5 points depending on the nature and type of question. You are allowed to have 9 wrong points, if you have 10 wrong points, you fail the test. (So, if you have 2 wrong answers worth 5 points each, you fail the test. While you can have 4 questions worth 2 points each wrong and still pass the test.)
The test contains a mix of photo, video and text based questions. (e.g. you can be given a photo of a sign, a video of a real road situation or just a fact based question and asked to provide an answer.) The tricky part is that there can be multiple correct answers. Sometimes all the answers are correct answers. So, have to read all the questions patiently and answer them. Now the good news is that TÜV has a fixed set of questions and all the questions in the test are asked from that set only.
Course Material:
You can study for exam using Licence book, mobile apps or both. Mobile app is a must. It
has about 1100 questions and theory test will have 30 questions out of them.
Steps to prepare for the exam:
Understand and learn all signs
Read book once
Go through all the questions in the app. (If you have gone through the book, you will have about 15-25% questions wrong, around 30% otherwise)
Practice your wrong questions and understand them
Go through all the questions 3 times before the exam
Take some practice theory test
That’s really it! You should be able to pass the test easily if
Tips and tricks:
Most people fail the exam because they underestimate the effort required for preparation. It took me 14 hours to finish the first round of questions. If you think you will pass the test by studying last 2 days, trust me, that is very difficult to do.
Discuss your wrong questions with friends or driving school instructor. That really helps to understand topics in detail.
take snapshots of difficult questions to quickly browse through before the exam.
This is the first draft and update is coming soon!
Enjoy your preparation!
