1. Describe your teaching and tutoring experience.
I've had a few teaching positions throughout my college career.
I started as a conversation partner at the International Student Services office. I would meet individually with students once or twice a week to practice their English. At the start of the semester we would cover basic grammar, but by the end we were discussing American expressions and slang terms.
I also worked as a teachers assistant for the remedial English classes put on by the program. I never taught lessons in front of the whole class, but I was in charge when it came to breakout groups.
During the summer, I started applying for jobs related to my industry and landed a part-time IT position for the Extension and International Programs Department. I was in charge of the help desk, so I would assist all faculty members with any tech related issues. Even though my responsibility was to simply resolve the issue, I would often walk through my thought process with the employee so they may better understand what caused the issue and how to resolve it next time.
In my final year at CSUF, I only had a few classes left so I took on a Software-Engineering internship at First American Title. I would say I did more learning than teaching on the job, but the lowered number of classes at school allotted me more time to help my classmates. I would set up Discord servers for each class and invite anyone interested. I would create flash cards, hold study sessions, and record short clips of me explaining difficult topics I didn't understand at first.
2. Tell us about yourself. What are your interests outside of school? What else would students enjoy knowing about you?
Since quarantine started, most of my extra curricular activities have been at home. Recently I've been riding my bike and practicing guitar.
I've also been working on some personal coding projects to keep me up to date with the latest trends. I'm finishing up a TypeScript / Firebase application that stores all my data from my Android phone and Fitbit. I've also started gathering data from Zillow to determine the best place to afford a home in SoCal.
When I want to relax, I enjoy cross-stitching pixel art. I usually have a tech talk or online lecture on in the background to pass the time. It started out as a way to decorate my dorm, but it's turned into a side hustle for friends and family.
3. Which subjects are your strongest? Computer Science
What makes you an awesome Computer Science tutor? Describe any experience, qualifications or strategies here.
Even though I've only been out of school for 3 months, I've been working in the tech industry for over 3 years now. I started as an IT student assistant where I learned how to break down complex computer concepts into understandable bits of information for employees. I learned that everyone has a different level of understanding when it comes to computers and it takes patience and understanding to be an effective teacher.
In terms of qualifications, I do have my Bachelor's in Computer Science and I am currently working towards a few certificate programs for full-stack development.
