Lightning Talks

Quick hits on lightning talks for GHRDEN.

Expectations

  • Give two lightning talks before graduation
    • 1 on a topic of your choosing
    • 1 on a technical topic (code/code-related)
  • Take the lightning talks seriously
    • Prepare a slide deck/visual aide
    • Practice so your presentation is polished and professional
    • Do your best to hit the 8 minute time marker

Purpose

  • Practice public speaking skills
  • Become better at communicating your ideas and talking about technology
  • Be more prepared to speak at conferences and meetups
  • Be more prepared to speak during interviews
  • Be more prepared to speak during meetings & presentations at work

Format

  • 8 minutes long
  • Time for questions after each presentation
  • Time for feedback
    • What presenter did well
    • What they can improve upon

Facilitator

  • Ensure student is ready (connected to TV's, etc.)
  • Introduce student
    • Ex. 'Please put your hands together for (student-name)!
  • Keep time for them
    • Raise hand & show fingers to let student know how much time is left (up to facilitator):
      • 5 minutes left
      • 3 minutes left
      • 2 minutes left
      • 1 minute left
  • Faciliate questions & feedback

Notes

  • I like to write down the feedback and slack it to the cohort channel after the talks
