1. Getting started with Rust on Linux with vim

1. Getting started with Rust on Linux with vim

Installing Rust with rustup

URL: https://rustup.rs/

Do this command:

curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh

Choose default install. This will modify your .bashrc to source ~/.cargo/env. Login again.

Install additional components:

rustup component add rust-analyzer
rustup component add rust-src

And for good measure add gdb and lldb:

sudo apt install gdb lldb

Setting up vim:

Install vim:

sudo apt install vim

plug.vim:

Install plug.vim (see here):

curl -fLo ~/.vim/autoload/plug.vim --create-dirs \
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/junegunn/vim-plug/master/plug.vim

Put this into ~/.vimrc at the beginning:

call plug#begin()

call plug#end()

Install nodejs:

curl -sL install-node.vercel.app/lts | sudo bash

(you need at least version 14, node must be in the path)

Install CoC (see here)

Put into .vimrc in the plug section at the top:

Plug 'neoclide/coc.nvim', {'branch': 'release'}

Then run (in vim):

:PlugInstall

to install the new vim plugin.

Install the rust-analyzer plugin for CoC (in vim):

:CocInstall coc-rust-analyzer

Configure CoC:

Install sample vim configuration for CoC into .vimrc:

From here:

You can then use

  • gd : jump to definition
  • gi : jump to implementation
  • gr : show references
  • 'K' : Show type or manual page
  • 'Ctrl-O' : go back to previous location
  • etc.

Create a sample Rust project:

cargo new hello
cd hello
cargo run
fn f(x:i32) -> i32 {
    x + 17
}

fn main() {
    let a = 12;
    println!("Hello, world! {}", f(a));
}
