Consent Process from "Deciding with Consents" by Roman Bercot

Consent Process

Excerpt from "Deciding with Consents" by Roman Bercot

1. State the Proposal

The person proposing the idea frames the problem or opportunity and offers a proposed way to address it.

2. Ask Questions

Participants ask clarifying questions that the proposer can answer.

3. Share Reactions

The group shares their reactions to the proposal. The proposer listens but does not respond.

4. Restate the Proposal

The proposer may adjust the proposal based on the questions and reactions offered so far.

5. State Objections

The group silently records objections to avoid influencing each other. Then each participant shares their most important objections.

6. Resolve Objections

Objectors work with the proposer to resolve each Paramount Objection until a satisfactory proposal is finalized.

7. Ratification

When no objections remain, participants agree to adopt the proposal for the agreed duration. The results of the Consent are recorded in a shared space.
