Exercise 53.1

He didn't fancy playing tennis.

She suggested going for a walk.

He denied causing the accident.

They didn't mind waiting a few minutes.

She admitted not telling the truth.

Exercise 53.2

  1. I’m trying to concentrate. Please stop making so much noise!

Exercise 53.3. Put the words in the right order.

Exercise 54.4 Use your own ideas to complete these sentences. Use -ing.

Exercise 60.1: Complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first.

Exercise 60.2: Complete the sentences using by -ing.

Choose from these verbs: break drive put

1 The burglars got into the house by breaking a window.

2 I was able to reach the top shelf by standing on a chair.

3 You turn on the computer by pressing the button at the back.

4 Kevin got himself into financial trouble by borrowing too much money.

5 You can put people’s lives in danger by driving too fast.

6 We made the room look nicer by putting some pictures on the walls.

Exercise 60.3: Complete the sentences with a suitable word. Use only one word each time.

1 We ran ten kilometres without stopping.

4 You need to think carefully before taking an important decision.

I’m looking forward to seeing her. 

3 You’re going to the dentist tomorrow. You don’t enjoy visits to the dentist. How do you feel?

I’m not looking forward to visiting the dentist. 

4 Rachel doesn’t like school, but she’s leaving next summer. How does she feel?

Rachel is looking forward to finishing school. 

5 Joe and Helen are moving to a new apartment soon. It’s much nicer than where they live now. How do they feel?

They are looking forward to moving to the new apartment.
