This is a quick write up of installing Apple CarPlay in my 2012 mk6 Golf R.
- US Spec
- Dynaudio
- Multi-function steering wheel
- No backup camera
- 6 speed manual
- Hoping the USB cable doesn't get in the way of shifting
Model: RCD330
I ordered the head unit from Amazon, here.
The unit is, as far as I can, an OEM Volkswagen head unit programmed by Volkswagen. It at least shows the VW splash screen when powering it on.
The installation was pretty straight forward. I used the guide here.
-
x1 large wire loom, the main connector
-
x2 1 pin connectors
-
x1 2 pin connector
-
The head unit I bough had an adapter for the two pin wire that sits behind the headunit.
-
The 2 1 pin connectors I left disconnected as the new head unit doesn't have a spot for those to connect.
-
Connect the large wire loom to the obvious spot on the back of the new head unit and connect the, in this case white, connector to the obvious spot of the new head unit.
Sorry the images are not showing inline, I'm suspecting this is due to using iCloud to host the photos.
- Steering wheel controls still work only if the car is powered on. If you turn the car off the radio will stay on until you open the door. Before the point of opening the door the steering wheel controls now longer work.
- The Dynaudio system seems to work but, I currently have a bummed ear so I don't have my full hearing.
- If you go to the home screen on you iPhone and open an app that's not built for CarPlay then the front speakers disable and only the rear speakers are working. I suspect this won't be a big deal.
- When I go into reverse the backup camera wants to engage. Since I don't have a backup camera installed the head unit simply states it can't find the camera.
