The TIOBE programming index claims to measure popularity of programming languages.

In fact, it mostly measures the number of documents on the web since ever that contain the term +<language> programming and the vast majority of those documents were indexed by google, and another major part is found on Amazon's web shop.

How these results become a proxy of recent popularity I'm not sure.
