Install node.js and git on an Amazon EC2 instance

PREREQUISITES

This assumes that you have already experimented with creating instances under EC2 and know 
how to use ssh keys to access an instance.  If not, try experimenting with that first and 
setup some keys.

This also assume that you have a Security Group with Port 80 available.  If not, experiment 
with creating one of those as well.

CREATE A NEW INSTANCE

1. Login to the AWS console: https://aws.amazon.com/console/
2. Click on the EC2 tab
3. You should be on the EC2 Dashboard page - if not, click EC2 Dashboard under Navigation
4. Click: Launch Instance
5. Select: Quick Launch
6. Select: Ubuntu Server 11.10 / 64 bit
7. Click: Continue
8. Click: Edit Details
9. Expand: Security Settings
10. Select a group you created in the prerequisites that has Port 80 available
11. Click: Save Details
12: Click: Launch
13: Click: Close
14. You should be back in the dashboard
15. Click: Instance
16. While waiting for your instance to boot up, the Name should default to "Empty" 
 - click on it and give it a new name, like "nodejs1" 
17. When Status Checks shows a green check mark, you should be ready to login.

LOGIN TO INSTANCE

1. Click on the instance so that you can see it's host name.
2. In a terminal window change to the folder where you have the *.PEM file that you created
to access your instances.
3. Type the following at the command line (substituting your pem and instance hostname):

    ssh -i [.your_keypair].pem ubuntu@[your-ec2-hostname].amazonaws.com

INSTALL NODE

At the command line type the following:

    sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/node.js
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install nodejs npm
    node --version

INSTALL GIT

    sudo apt-get install git
    git --version

TO UPGRADE NODE AT A LATER DATE

If a later version of node.js is released, just install again to upgrade:

    sudo apt-get install nodejs npm
