homebrew install gfortran
homebrew install python
homebrew install distribute
homebrew install pip
pip install ipython
pip install numpy
pip install scipy
pip install -f http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/matplotlib/matplotlib/matplotlib-1.0/matplotlib-1.0.0.tar.gz matplotlib

Does this really work?? I typically find that numpy, matplotlib need a few configuration options before it installs properly, which is why I've stuck with easy_install eggs.

I think at some point I reinstalled python without the --framework option, but these steps work for me. Are you using homebrew?

homebrew install gfortran
homebrew install python --framework
# now set the variables it tells you, and reload them
easy_install pip
pip install --upgrade distribute
pip install numpy
pip install scipy
pip install -f http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/matplotlib/matplotlib/matplotlib-1.0/matplotlib-1.0.0.tar.gz matplotlib

that seems to work for me
