UCSC SUA Elections History

The attached TSV contains data on all persons who have run in the UC Santa Cruz Student Union Assembly elections since 1999, when these records were published online by University administration. At time of writing, the campus office charged with maintaining and publishing this data is the Dean of Students office.

Schema

Column	Description
Election	Election year.
Term	Term this candidate would serve if elected.
Position	Position the candidate is running for as noted in the results document. These positions have been restructured year-to-year and can vary a little.
Function	We've matched each position to a "function" to help mitigate the changes in position names and responsibilities over the years. This is not an exact science; while some cases are seemingly simple (e.g. what is currently the role of the President was formerly the role of the Chair), we can't guarantee that the function of each office has stayed the same over the years.
Name	Candidate name
Votes	Amount of votes cast for the candidate
Proportion	Proportion of students that voted for the candidate out of all ballots submitted for any candidate running for the position. This is a calculated field; it was not verified with the proportions published in the elections reports. This value is rounded to three decimal places.
Winner	TRUE if the candidate won the race they competed in, and FALSE otherwise. This is a calculated field based on the Proportion column (IF, MAXIFS); it was not independently verified with the elections reports.

Deviations

Listings for the Fall 2002 and Fall 2013 elections are omitted as neither of the special elections that occurred during those periods listed officers on the ballot (measures only).

The elections reports deviate between listening write in candidates as write-ins and write-in. In either case, we have noted such votes as Write-ins. Any other omission or deviation is noted in the Comments column.

Attribution

Collected data is cited. In the majority of cases, this data was readily available online as provided by the Dean of Students office. In some cases, we've reached out to the office directly for clarification on some data, or referred to an archived version of elections results which for some reason was not available at the DOS site.
