In most cases, it's the current that poses the most immediate danger, rather than the voltage. Even low voltage can be dangerous if enough current flows through the body. While high voltages can be more likely to cause electrical breakdown in the skin (allowing current to flow into the body), it's the amount of current passing through the body that determines the extent of injury or potential fatality.
Factors that influence the harm caused by electric shock include:
Current Path: The path the current takes through the body affects the organs and tissues it affects. Current passing through the heart or brain is particularly dangerous.
Duration of Exposure: The longer the exposure to the electric current, the more severe the effects are likely to be.
Individual Factors: People may have different levels of resistance, so the same current passing through different individuals can have varying effects.
Frequency: The frequency of the current can also play a role in determining its effects on the body.
