"Black Room," is a browser-based, narrative game about falling asleep while on your computer, on the internet. You play as an insomniac on the verge of sleep, moving through shifting states of consciousness. Hallucinatory, pixelated visions of landscapes filled with sprites ripped directly from the arcade/NES/SNES video games of your childhood appear and disappear as you click through fragile internet spaces. Point-n-click mini games are scattered throughout the narrative. Often interrupted, you continually return to the Black Room, a meditation technique your mother taught you for falling asleep, visualizing black flowers in a black vase on a black table in the center of a black room.
This game, conceived as a feminist dungeon crawler, features a majority female cast of video game sprites from the 1970s-current day. This work seeks to bring these characters together to form new narratives: Chun Li reposes elegantly in a desert oasis filled with flamingos; Catwoman languidly cartwheels across the nighttime beaches of Coney Island; Jennifer Simpson, the lead character from Clock Tower, runs endlessly through the brightly pixelated fantasy landscapes of the Oregon Trail. These narratives appear as "Strange Visions," to the player, induced by shifting stages of wakefulness.

Elsinore turns William Shakespeare's classic tragedy Hamlet into a time-looping story in the vein of Groundhog Day or Majora's Mask. As Ophelia, the player lives through the tragedy of Hamlet over and over again, trying to find ways to alter the fate of her friends and family. The game's simulation tracks what every character in the play knows and believes, and uses that information to choose what "scene" will happen next. While the actual scenes are hand written, this allows Elsinore to dynamically respond to all sorts of player actions in exciting and often unpredictable ways.
There have been a few other games to take on Hamlet, and most have taken a comedic approach. But in Elsinore, most of the actions the player can take only lead to more tragedy, and while each outcome can give you a better understanding of the world and the characters that inhabit it, something will always be lost for everything gained. Elsinore challenges the player to make the most of unwinnable situations—and choose what is most important to them.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is a single-player narrative game about traveling and telling stories, set in an America inspired by folklore and the Great Depression. Unlike other narrative games, however, WTWTLW is structured not as a single central narrative, but as a collection of short stories. While wandering, the player will meet 16 different characters, each of whom was written by a different writer. The stories share the theme of the failure of the American Dream, especially as it relates to those outside the mainstream of American society. The player, cursed to wander the land as the personification of Folk culture, takes on the task of spreading folktales and helping them grow, as well as collecting the life stories of the characters they meet.
The game has both a 3D overworld that the player wanders, having various adventures, and 2D conversation scenes between the player and the characters. In small branching choice sequences scattered around the world, the player collects stories on a variety of topics, and then trades those over the campfire with the characters encountered to learn more about their lives and their personal stories. Over time, these stories that the player scatters around will be passed from person to person and grow in the telling, becoming better (although less true). Through all this, the player must maintain their health and other resources against the difficulties of the hobo life. If the player can earn the trust and see the true inner selves of all 16 of the characters, their assigned task is over and they can rest.

The main window is a top-down map view of the mansion, where you can move the cursor to search for and select objects in your current room. New areas reveal themselves as you unlock doors and explore. In the upper-right is a zoomed-in view of objects that you interact with and enemies that you fight. Your character is displayed in the bottom-right, where you can transition between defense and attack position. You will be challenged repeatedly by the battles and likely die, but fortunately you can quickly retry without losing progress as many times as you would like. There are no upgrades or leveling up, so conquering the challenges is entirely up to your own wit and persistence.
10 Mississippi is a stop motion game about a day's routine, played over and over and over and over again. This zine is a collection of life experiences, commentary on struggle, and oddly enough my own version of a power-fantasy. I have come to think that we have a backward idea of power, and perception of strength. We always have, and I think this is a byproduct of a historically patriarchal system. From religion, to politics, to economics, power is viewed as how many people you can subjugate. Respect is how many people fear you because of your power. How you can get what you want at the expense of others, how you are the biggest dog in the dog-eat-dog world that we have created for ourselves...
Our popular entertainment has always drawn from this point of view. It's simply fact. You use your power to hurt your enemies and eliminate them.
We don't really have a concept, in our culture, or discussion about alternative views of power from a survivor's standpoint. How is it like for survivors? Are people that live with trauma strong? Are people with mental disorders, or PTSD strong? Why is suicide seen as selfish and weak, when the person that lived with it got as far as they did? We don't popularly view survivors, victims, traumas, etc, as strength. It is a weakness, and I don't like that. I think this is because we have created a culture where we cannot really ever move past pain. We don't teach people how to heal, to overcome, or be powerful. We teach people to be perpetual survivors. We live with pain, but no way of transcending it. I think a lot of this can be credited to how we view "strength". I don't think the icon, epitome, of strength should be how many people you can hurt, conquer, overcome, but how much of this abuse you can overcome. How long you can live with what happened to you. How strong you are for being here. How powerful you are for being strong because you have no other option but to be strong.
Surviving is one thing, but living with it is an entirely different fight, and I think this is where examples of real strength are.
If approached from this point of view then it is an obvious conclusion that you should be celebrated simply for being here.
You are normal for your imperfections, and the way you cope. You are the hero in the story of your life, and you have every right to be proud.
These are a collection of very abstract life experiences, things I felt while going through hard times, and how I felt, or moved on, afterward.
A lot of it is presented via humor, or creates ridiculous circumstances, because I feel like life is ridiculous. It's one damn thing after the other and after a while there's nothing left to do but laugh at it. Humor is what helps take the edge off, perhaps even create a platform for transcendence. Either way, it has been cathartic.
