The maps I want to make

This is a interactive travel diary that we made with Lena Mazilu about a trip between Istanbul and the Carpathians in 2011. Unfortunately this was made in Flash and relied on Pixel Bender, which was made so slow in the latest versions of the Flash Player that the site is now barely usable. I want to make a new version, more "map-centric", obviously. I'm thinking of a long vertical scrollable map, that would seamlessly switch between Istanbul (large scale) and Bulgaria/Romania/Carpathians (smaller scale). Also a very good opportunity to try Mapbox GL. See http://blogfolio.lenamazilu.fr/graphisme/2011/07/17/0136_bientot.html

  • "Et si New York avait parlé français" ("What if New York had spoken french?")

(http://www.economica.fr/livre-et-si-new-york-avait-parle-francais-oe-forray-gilbert,fr,4,9782717852370.cfm) Contrary to what the title might suggest, this book is not an uchronia, but still a very interesting read. It's the engrossing story of how France failed to settle on the east coast (and thus to conquer America). This book is a gem and screams of being put to an animated/interactive map.

  • Paris OSM miscellanea

A series of "OSM objects of Paris boards": roundabouts, metro lines, public squares, ponds... Graphical treatment could be similar to those tomatoes/breads/clocks/whatever posters (http://www.gmushrooms.com/Posters/TOMATOES.jpg), or to the vintage river/mountains atlases (http://www.amazon.fr/monde-sur-une-feuille-comparatifs/dp/2849753432/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1439649569&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=atlas+rivi%C3%A8res+montagnes)

  • head tracking

A map that you would interact/navigate with using the movements of your head (would be tracked by your camera and a library such as https://github.com/auduno/headtrackr/ I'm thinking of a 'fog-of-war' effect as in RTS games

  • A 3D globe

(cesium.js or even 3D printed?), with all the topography reversed: mountains become abyssal pits, oceans become continents, etc. Such maps have been made in abundance (http://cartographerswithoutborders.org/post/45170902051/if-lands-were-waters-and-waters-lands-depths) but I'd like to see that in 3D. Just 3x exaggerated topography would be fun

  • European Road Signs Typefaces

This excellent Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_European_road_signs) that sparked this fun viral map : https://twitter.com/szescstopni/status/637624475303956480 Gives a lot of ideas for maps, datavizs in general or even stupid comparison GIFs. A map of the typefaces used accross Europe GIFs comparing wild animals, trains, trams, bycicles, works, with the outline of the country.
