Thanks for giving me a bit of your time. We're doing an Istio celebration stream on August 17th.
Twitch is a popluar video gaming live streaming platform and recently has seen a lot of coding content showing up. We've been doing live coding and presentations there and it's been fun.
What we're going to do is a 'whole day party' stream with a couch, demos, and a rotating cast of guests and hosts. If you have seen the AWS stream or IBM Code streams, we're thinking it'll be like that. Should be high content value, but not overly formal so it looks 'low key.' I'm planning to minimize the IBM component and get a wide range of companies/groups represented. We'll have a couch for chats/interviews and a desk for demos/live-coding. Hopefully we alternate between the two and get to say corny phrases like 'lets throw it back to the couch to get their take on this.'
So my request would be to have you come on the stream and show some cool stuff, chat with us, throw some confetti, etc. We're planning to film it live in Waston West at 505 Howard in SF. If you can't make it to SF we have the ability to bring folks in via hangouts, but that's not as fun. If I can get the content together, I want to go all day 10-6 (eeep!) We have the video expertise to set everything up no problem, all you have to bring is a laptop and/or yourself. We can show websites on stream, capture HDMI from your laptop, etc.
There is a chat system built into twitch and we can see it while presenting, so we can answer questions and be interactive.
Something like this, but with more Istio theming. Two views. One is couch (we might have just one camera looking at the couch). The other is probably desk w/ a large laptop capture taking up most of the space.
We'll have some really awesome graphics made up and use OBS to stitch it together and look super nice.
This is a hard one to know in advance. It's basically a function of content quality and promotion. So even if you can't participate, you can help us promote it, or help us find other quests to present quality content. Our high water mark was a StarCraft II + DataScience stream that hit a peak 1100 concurent viewers. We've also had unpromoted streams with 12 people watching. On Friday, July 27th, we did a similar all day stream with the topic of 'Call for Code' and had a consistent 50-90 concurent viewers for a total unique viewers of 1944 on the day and 3600 "live views."
No no! Spencer works at IBM, as does the video production crew. But the goal here is to do this as the Istio community and for the wider contianer/operations/devops/sre communities. Most notably we'll have Istio branding on the stream not corporate branding, though we will have company names connected to guests, and might explore putting e.g. a RedHat logo up when a redhat person is the guest.
Yay! Send a quick note to nibz @ spencerkrum dot com and we'll figure out what kind of role you can play in this thing. We have lots of opportunities so don't be shy, even if you don't have a perfect picture of what you want to do/talk about we can help you get it there and make it look good!
Your point-of-contact will be filled in here closer to the day of. This person will get you into the building, let you know when you are on, help you feel relaxed, help you set up your computer to stream, etc. You can text with them in the days leading up to the event as well. You can email Spencer (nibz @ spencerkrum dot com) at any time in the lead up with questions.
We have a room in the rocket chat, this is the best place to get info especially on the day of, as we'll have multiple directors and producers coordinaing guests (especially virtual guests). https://istio.rocket.chat/channel/twitch

We'll be having you in via a Zoom meeting. Our director will capture you, and our hosts in the studio, and zip that together with OBS. Most remote guests are between two live guests. That means you can easily join the zoom meeting a couple minutes before your show time, the director will help you get things set up, and count you in so you know when you are live. If your remote sessions is right after a different remote session, join the call as close to the passing time as possible. We have you join quickly so the couch can have full screen stream while the director is setting up the feeds. This is where being in the rocket chat will also be super super useful for coordinating.
When coming in remotely, we encourage you to have a demo of some kind planned, as that makes the event more engaging.
We're hosting 3 office hours so folks can get used to the director/zoom/etc.
- Tuesday Aug 14, 3:30pm Central
- Thursday Aug 16, 11am Central
- Thursday Aug 16, 4pm Central
To join these just get in the rocket chat and zoom. We can test your setup, work on the demo, get feedback, and get you comfortable with the format.
- Use a USB Webcam instead of the built in camera in your laptop. Better picture and the angle is better too.
- Audio is one of the most important things. Make sure you don't have a bad echo, turn of various fans, etc.
- Clean up your office / have an interesting background. Art, books, maps, old computers - all of these things make the background pop
- Have a second monitor/laptop open with twitch chat - that way you can see questions and respond. this link will put just the chat in an iframe.
- Hand Signals: We use the hand signals from this video when filming live hand signals
Thanks again for being on the show!
