Frquently Asked Questions - NetSpeed Indicator

The indicator disappears frequently. What should I do?

This happens in devices with some manufacturers because of some non-standard battery optimizations on those phones.

Here are a couple of tricks you can try to avoid this.

  1. Disable "Battery optimization" for this app.
  2. Some phones have background execution white-list. You can add the app to your phones white-list if possible.
  3. Some phones have auto-start permission for apps. Make sure that auto-start is enabled for this app.
  4. Pin the app to recent tasks. This is found to be working on some devices.

Note that you can always open the app to start the indicator in case it disappears.

You can have a look at dontkillmyapp.com for more information specific to your device.

We agree that none of these are the real solutions. But unfortunately, this is the best we can do at this time. We're constantly trying to get the app work nicely on more and more devices.

How to show or hide indicator from lock screen?

On devices with Android 8+, you can hide or show notification on lock screen by going to the app -> Tap on "Notification settings" -> "Advanced" -> "On lock screen" and selecting your preferred options.

On devices with Android <8, you can hide or show notification on lock screen by going to app and enabling or disabling "Lockscreen notification" option.

How to hide indicator when network is disconnected?

On devices with Android 8+

On devices with Android 8+, the recommended way is to use "Notification settings - disconnected" option.

  1. Tap on "Notification settings - disconnected" and enable the notification channel called "NetSpeed Indicator - Disconnected".
  2. Set other notification settings which will be applied to the notification when the network is not connected.

With these settings, you can hide the indicator from status bar when disconnected and show the notification with really low priority in notification tray.

Note that the "Hide when disconnected" is experimental and is not reliable on some devices. However you may also try this option to see if it works for you!

On devices with Android <8

On older Android devices, you can use "Hide when disconnected" option to completely hide notification when disconnected.

The indicator does not come up after internet is turned on with "Hide when disconnected" option.

This happens in some phones due to non-standard battery optimizations by the manufacturer. We're constantly trying to find a better solution to avoid this.

Please note that "Hide when disconnected" is experimental and may not work in all devices.

In the meantime, here are a couple of things you can try to avoid this.

  1. Disable battery optimization for this app. You can do this by going to Android Settings -> Search for "Battery optimization" -> All apps -> Select "NetSpeed Indicator" -> Select "Don't optimize". The steps may vary from phone to phone.
If it still does not work, have a look at the second option.

  2. Another option for devices with Android 8+ is to not use "Hide when disconnected" option but use other options to hide the indicator from status bar when disconnected.

You can use the following settings to hide the icon from status bar and have a least distracting notification in the notification tray.

  1. Go to app -> Turn off "Hide when disconnected" option.
  2. Go to app -> tap on "Notification settings - disconnected", which will open Android settings page for "NetSpeed Indicator - Disconnected" notification category.
  3. Enable this notification channel.
  4. Set the priority or behavior to "Lowest" or "Minimize". This will hide the notification icon from status bar when disconnected and show the notification with least priority in the notification tray.
  5. After you turn off and turn on the internet for the first time after setting this, you may have to repeat step 3 once.

With this settings the app stays on and will reliably show indicator when the network is turned back on.

Thanks for the app! Would it be possible to add an option to hide the indicator if there's no activity? The network is still connected, but the activity is 0kB/s (or maybe a specific threshold can be configured in the app).
