Instructions on how to fix npm if you've installed Node through Homebrew on Mac OS X or Linuxbrew

OBSOLETE

This entire guide is based on an old version of Homebrew/Node and no longer applies. It was only ever intended to fix a specific error message which has since been fixed. I've kept it here for historical purposes, but it should no longer be used. Homebrew maintainers have fixed things and the options mentioned don't exist and won't work.

I still believe it is better to manually install npm separately since having a generic package manager maintain another package manager is a bad idea, but the instructions below don't explain how to do that.

Fixing npm On Mac OS X for Homebrew Users

Installing node through Homebrew can cause problems with npm for globally installed packages. To fix it quickly, use the solution below. An explanation is also included at the end of this document.

Learning Grunt by writing a verbose Gruntfile that replaces (and, goes beyond) what we're used to with CodeKit.

Get a twitter profile image from a username. We route around bad APIs. Twitter wears the scumbag hat, these days.
#!/bin/bash
# Usage: $0 username
# e.g.:
# $ ./twitter_user_to_image coates
# https://si0.twimg.com/profile_images/1597362183/me.jpg
curl -sL http://twitter.com/$1 | grep profile_images | head -n1 | perl -p -e's/.*?http/http/;s/".*//;s/_bigger//'

Thank you for taking a look under the hood of our progressive disclosure demo. Please note that this is a work in progress, so it's a tad messy and bound to change.

Making Sass Linear Gradient Mixins Behave in IE

I wrote this fairly straightforward cross-browser linear gradient mixin:

@mixin gradient($from-color, $to-color) {
	background-color: mix($from-color, $to-color); /* Fallback */
	background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, 0% 0%, 0% 100%, from($from-color), to($to-color));
	background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, $from-color, $to-color);
	background-image:    -moz-linear-gradient(top, $from-color, $to-color);
	background-image:     -ms-linear-gradient(top, $from-color, $to-color);
	background-image: -o-linear-gradient(top, $from-color, $to-color);
