Mod 2 Week 2 Personal Development

  1. Assess your habits from week 1: how did you spend your time this past week? What was effective in your habits? What could be more effective? What steps will you take to make that happen?

My time this week has been much more productive and effective than they have been before. I was able to stay much more focused on keeping a consistent schedule for work time and personal time, giving myself the proper time to rest in relation to still pushing myself professional and coding, having more family time and coming back knowing that I haven't forgotten anything and feel more refreshed, as well as working on and stretching between break times in class to stay loose.

Improvements I would like to continue making for this week are to get in a full weekly workout routine. Right now I have just started the basics with the stretching and small workouts between class, however that has helped me get back into the swing of things. Focusing on small, achievable steps and following through with them has been really crucial for me instead of looking at a daunting task and opting to not do it.

  1. Write a draft of your professional story here as 1-2 paragraphs. Focus on answering the questions who are you, why are you here, and what’s next? Consider how to talk about your motives and values, the turning points that led to your career change, and what you envision for yourself going forward.

While I was going to college back on 2008 for video game design, my Uncle asked me if I knew how to build website. At that moment, I told him I had never done one before but could probably figure it out for him. I remember a specific instance where a client wanted to have a captcha form on his contact form submission. I had implemented this using PHP and some random template I found on the internet for how to do it. Even with instructions and a template, it took me almost 2 weeks to figure out and I remember the process being extraordinarily difficult. When it was finished and the client was very excited not having to filter through more spam mail, it felt great as an achievement knowing how it helped them and that's when I knew that programming would be a great field for me.

I am here because you're values are not only relatable to clients, they also are relatable to your employees as well. As a student of life myself, I am always looking for and passionate about ways to bring change to myself, others around me, and others that will interact with projects that I build on a daily basis. SAP's values really hit home with me and it felt invested into your company, as well as knowing that it is a place that we could grow together with. My mission is to bring as much value to your company, your products, and your team that your clients bring to your business your corporation provies to your clients.

  1. Update your LinkedIn profile with the following: updated photo/headshot, headline, summary statement using your story, and Turing added to your experience and education sections. Include a link to your profile here in the journal. Remember the guidelines and tips from the lesson here.

  1. What other steps will you take this week to update your branding or practice your story?
  • Continue verbalizing my story to make it more personal.
  • Continue updating my LinkedIn Profile.
  • Reach out to other members in my cohort as well as alumni/upper mod students that have given me permission to connect with them.
  • Become a larger member of the community with more interaction.
  • Do skill checks on LinkedIn.

Thanks for submitting your week 2 reflection, @npdarrington! Really enjoy hearing about your interest in programming - especially the specific story about building out a captcha form. I'm curious - when looking at your resume prior to coming to Turing, I see that you had some dev experience. What is the story behind coming to Turing? Was it a push to learn more about FE? I would push you to think about how you might rework that second paragraph to focus more on your values/motivation as a whole.

Regarding your LinkedIn, be sure to add Turing to your experience section!
