<td><b>Title:</b> Like Water for Chocolate
<br />
<b>Author:</b> Laura Esquivel
<br />
<b>Date of Publication:</b> 1950
<br />
<b>Genre:</b> Magical Realism, Romantic Novel
<br /> </td>
<td rowspan="2"><b>Details of setting (include changes in setting):</b>
<p>The story takes place for the most part in Mexico on Mama Elena's ranch. It is a ranch that Mama Elena had to run on her own when her husband died after Tita was born and she has kept a strong hold on the people who work there and on her daughters.</p>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><b>Describe the author's style:</b>
<p>Laura Esquivel wrote the book to look like a cookbook with each recipe turning into a story of the life of Tita, the protagonist. The book is written in "12 months", but the story spans over years. Esquivel uses magical realism and a great amount of figurative language.</p>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><b>Copy a short passage that demonstrates the author's style:</b>
<p>Chapter 3 - "... was the image of the refreshing shower ahead of her, but unfortunately she was able to enjoy it, because the drops that fell from the shower never made it to her body: they evaporated before they reached her. Her body was giving off so much heat that the wooden walls began to split and burst into flames."</p>
</td>
<td>
<b>Significance of setting to the meaning of the work:</b>
<p>The kitchen is a prominent setting in the story and in the life of Tita. Tita was literally born and raised in the kitchen and her life was surrounded by the feel and smell of food. Even though what she was doing in the kitchen was under the hand of Mama Elena, it did not stop the emotion and connection that Tita had when preparing the food.</p> (I feel there should be more added but not sure what to put)</td>

<h4>Memorable Quotes</h4></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>
<h4>Quote</h4></td>
<td>
<h4>Significance</h4></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>You did it, you killed Roberto!’ Screamed Tita</td>
<td>Tita could have kept the child healthy if it wasn't for mama Elena’s interference and once the baby dies Tita finally has enough of her mother and begins her detachment from mama Elena.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>“each of us is born with a box of matches inside us. . . That's why it's important to keep your distance from people with frigid breath”</td>
<td>Not only is John growing close to Tita by telling him his grandma's personal theory but this perfectly describes Tita’s situation. Her being cold all the time and mama Elena “extinguishing” her happiness.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>“she had come with the intention of showing mama Elena how she had triumphed in life”</td>
<td>Even though Gertrudis had left the ranch just like Tita she came back for Mama Elena just like Tita had done to take care of mama Elena. This shows that even though they resent their mom in their own ways they still care about her.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>“Yes, it! I curse it! It and you, forever”</td>
<td>This shows that Mama Elena will never forgive Tita for breaking tradition even if she's dead and will continue to ruin her happiness.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Tita told chencha her decision never to go back to the ranch again.</td>
<td>Tita has finally had enough of her mother and has decided to let her go. In retrospect if she had actually stayed away from the ranch then she probably would have married John and have her happy ending with him.</td>
</tr>

<tr>
<td><b>Significance of the opening scene</b> Opening up with a tip to avoid weeping while chopping onions, literally introduces our main character and protagonist; Tita. She is born into this world in a puddle of tears and given away immediately. This leads the reader to understand how harsh Mama Elena will be, and how hard life will be for Tita.</td>
<td rowspan="2"><b>Symbols</b>
<ol>

<h4>Food</h4>The roses are a symbol of sexual desire and they lead to the Gertrudis running away from the ranch and Mama Elena's rule. </li>

<li>
<h4>Matches</h4>Morning Lights theory that every person has a box of matches inside them that must be lit. As well as signifying Titas burning passion and love.</li>
<li>
<h4>The Kitchen</h4>Her emotions are strongly attached to the kitchen that it allows Tita to express herself and cast spells over her dinners. </li>
<li>
<h4>Tears</h4>Tears, a seasoning for food, and Tita's were powerful enough to make grown men cry like a children.</li>
</ol>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><b>Significance of the ending/closing screen</b>Taking burning passion to the extreme the ending scene signifies Tita realizing her true lover has died and is in bliss and wishes to join him. In order to restore her inner fire she swallows lit candles and her passion being so strong sets fire to the barn leaving behind Tita's cookbook of mastered recipe, keeping her story alive.</td>
