Xposition Markdown note
The following subcases serve to clarify the boundaries of [ss Purpose]:
1. A desired outcome that is separate from, but typically a motivation for (hence subtype of [ss Explanation]), the main event.
It is possible to complete the main event without realizing the purpose.
2. **Inanimate** thing or event which is aided/facilitated/addressed/achieved/acquired as a consequence of the main event:
- [ex 006 "We hired a caterer [p en/for Purpose] the party."]
- [ex 007 "surgery [p en/for Purpose] an ingrown toenail"]
- [ex 008 "Call the doctor [p en/for Purpose] an appointment."]
- [ex 009 "Go to the store [p en/for Purpose] eggs."]
For **animates** who are aided or harmed as a consequence of the main event, see [ss Beneficiary].
3. Something characterized as good/appropriate (or not) for some kind of use/activity/occasion or inanimate thing affected/addressed/etc., delimiting the applicability of a descriptor to that aspect of the thing:
- [ex 010 "This place is great [p en/for Purpose] ping-pong."]
- [ex 011 "This is a great place [p en/for Purpose] ping-pong."]
- [ex 012 "This cleaner is good [p en/for Purpose] hardwood floors."]
- [ex 013 "This restaurant is great [p en/for Purpose] dinner."]
The evaluation is being delimited to a particular purpose:
[exref 013 Purpose] is not claiming the restaurant is great in general, just with respect to dinner.
For **animates** used in similar constructions, see [ss Beneficiary].
Question test: [ss Explanation] and its subtype [ss Purpose], when used adverbially, license Why? questions.
