GPT-4 Rewrites The Thing
INT. ANTARCTIC RESEARCH STATION - NIGHT
The station is in ruins, flames consume the once-thriving research facility. Snow and wind whip through the shattered remains. McReady and Childs, both battered and exhausted, find themselves face-to-face in the heart of the inferno.
McREADY
(weakly)
Hey, Childs... You ain't lookin' so good.
Childs just grunts, barely able to muster a response.
CHILDS
(weakly)
Likewise.
McReady takes a seat on a piece of debris, the weight of the situation bearing down on him.
McREADY
You know, Childs... This whole mess... It reminds me of something that happened back in 'Nam.
Childs raises an eyebrow but doesn't interrupt.
McREADY
(continuing)
I was part of a recon squad. We got ambushed deep in the jungle... Surrounded on all sides. It was chaos. We were outgunned, outnumbered. I watched my friends die, one by one...
McReady's voice cracks as he recalls the memory, but he pushes through the pain.
McREADY
(continuing)
I knew I was gonna die that day. And as I lay there, bleeding out in the mud... I accepted it. Death was inevitable. But somehow, I made it out of there. Got back home. I survived.
McReady looks up, his eyes meeting Childs'.
McREADY
(continuing)
But now, here we are. The end of the world, and it feels like I've been running from death ever since.
CHILDS
(quietly)
So, which one of us is it?
McReady shakes his head, a sad smile forming on his lips.
McREADY
Does it really matter anymore, Childs? We're the only ones left. The fire will burn this place down and take whatever's left of that Thing with it.
Childs coughs, blood speckling his lips. McReady's eyes narrow, observing the blood. He pulls out a makeshift flamethrower, crafted from a flare gun and a can of fuel.
McREADY
(whispering)
I'm sorry, Childs.
With a heavy heart, McReady ignites the flamethrower, engulfing Childs in flames. Childs' body contorts and screams, the alien infection revealing itself as it attempts to escape the fire, but it's too late. The Thing is destroyed once and for all.
McReady, now alone, sits back down, his eyes heavy with the knowledge that he's done what needed to be done. As the fire rages around him, he embraces the inevitable - this time, death will not pass him by.
