PICO-8 tweetjam stuff

PICO-8 size optimization stuff for tweetcarts

Here are some simple ways to make your PICO-8 code fit in 140 280 characters (as in the #tweetjam #tweetcart craze). I did not invent these, I merely observed and collected them from the tweetjam thread.

LUA syntax stuff

  • Use single character variable names
  • Use x=.1 and x=.023, not x=0.1 or x=0.023
  • x=1/3 is shorter than x=.3333
  • You don't need to separate everything with spaces or write them on their own lines, e.g. circ(x,y,1)pset(z,q,7) works just as well

OSX How To: Uninstall native MySQL and install MariaDB via Homebrew

OSX How To: Uninstall native MySQL and install MariaDB via Homebrew

This is a short overview on how to completely remove any old mysql server installs in OSX and upgrade to MariaDB without conflicts. Things can get a bit weird when you have various old installs of MySQL server floating around, and utilizing homebrew to install and upgrade MariaDB as a drop in replacement for MySQL has worked well, especially if you're used to managing MySQL installs via yum in linux.

First: Backup Your Data!

Backup all of your current databases with mysqldump

This isn't a tutorial on backups, and there are many ways to do it. You should know how to backup your data anyway. For this example, we'll do a full backup of our InnoDB databases.

Running Node on a Samsung 303C Chromebook

Running Node on a Samsung 303C Chromebook

Motivation

After @mikeal and @lyle purchased Chromebooks for kids activities at NodeConf 2014, I was very impressed with the device and decided to explore this as a laptop and hacking device for my kids (7 & 8). I'd love to retain the simplicity of the web-focused ChromeOS experience while letting my kids hack on NodeBots and learn how to program.

It seems like the platforms that ChromeOS runs on are quite diverse. The Samsung 303C hit the right balance of being an aesthetically pleasing looking device, having respectable build quality and the amazing $250 price point. The 303C has an ARM processor. Not all Chromebooks do. I'm writing the below step-by-step very specifically for this system.

Deploy to `gh-pages` from a `dist` folder on the master branch. Useful for use with [yeoman](http://yeoman.io).

Deploying a subfolder to GitHub Pages

Sometimes you want to have a subdirectory on the master branch be the root directory of a repository’s gh-pages branch. This is useful for things like sites developed with Yeoman, or if you have a Jekyll site contained in the master branch alongside the rest of your code.

For the sake of this example, let’s pretend the subfolder containing your site is named dist.

Step 1

Remove the dist directory from the project’s .gitignore file (it’s ignored by default by Yeoman).
