Telephone phishing attempt
I just received a call from an automated system with caller ID of (949) 930-2782 purporting to be VISA security.
The automated message stated that my card has been restricted from making online payments, and I should
press 1 to be connected with the security department. VISA doesn't issue credit cards directly, so this
made me suspect it was a phishing attempt.
I pressed 1, and was prompted to continue with the automated activation process for my card. I pressed
1 to continue again.
The system then started "glitching", as the voice prompts started taking longer and longer to play out,
as if the system was under high load and didn't have enough CPU.
It prompted me for my credit card number, I entered 4000-0000-0000-0000.
Next, my expiration date in MMYY format, I entered 12-14.
My three digit verification code, I entered 000.
My billing ZIP code, I entered 00000.
The system prompted me to please hold as my card was being activated, and then played a message stating
that my card activation was successful and was now ready for online payments.
Scammers are getting bold, man.
