Patrick's Thoughts

Overview

  • Never read any Daredevil comics.
    • Everything I know is from hearing others talk about it and from the terrible Daredevil movie.
    • Somewhat familiar with Kingpin from Ultimate Spider-Man.
    • From what I understand, Daredevil started off a bit more free-wheeling, but then Frank Miller "Frank Miller"-ed it in the 80's, making it more dark and brooding
    • And that's what we seem to have here; very similar to Miller's work in Batman in the 80's when he made that darker and grittier.
    • But I think I like this, and this is a more interesting Batman than Batman.
      • Detective
      • Fights criminals in the night through intimidation and fear
      • Doesn't want to kill
      • But his movitivation is love of his neighborhood, not "ooh, my parents are dead"

In depth

  • Cast was really good

    • Charlie Cox I only knew as the naive main character in Stardust (also awesome)
    • Vincent D'Onofrio is always amazing
    • Rosario Dawson also does great work
    • Elden Hensen (Foggy Nelson) was kind of weak
    • Deborah Ann Wolf (Karen Page) did good work with not a whole lot of material in the beginning; didn't get meatier until the very end
  • Shot on a TV budget

    • But this doesn't mean what it used to mean; it's still super good
    • The hallway "single shot" fight scene, getting the kidnapped boy from the Russians, was so good. Not possible on a TV budget 5 or 10 years ago.
      • The cuts were obvious, if you know what to look for, but seamless.
  • The violence pushed a bit too far for my taste:

    • Specifically, the head spike and the head+door.
    • Nearly stopped watching
    • Show was still finding itself, and those extremes from early on didn't seem to repeat themselves.
  • Interesting how they tie into the Marvel movies obliquely, by references to Hell's Kitchen being such shambles because of the events of the first Avengers movie.

Future

  • Nobu is part of the same organization (The Hand) that Electra comes from (who was teased a bit, by referencing "that Greek girl" Matt had a crush on in college). They feature heavily in Daredevil comics, from what I understand.
  • Madame Gao, when she mentions she's going "a considerable distance further" than China, might be making reference to Iron Fist. There are "mystical cities", like Kun’ Lun, to which portals routinely appear on Earth but exist on some other planet. Iron Fist is one of the upcoming Netflix/Marvel shows.
  • Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) is an associate of Luke Cage, another upcoming Marvel show.
  • Next Marvel show is AKA Jessica Jones, about which I know nothing.
