  1. Prepare for Job Shadow: Guild
  • Activities: what questions do you have about the activities that a software developer does on a daily basis?
    • What’s the life as a junior dev look like at your company
  • Environment: what questions do you have about the overall environment and culture of this workplace?
    • How often do you have checkins with your manager
    • What are you hoping this position to achieve in 30 days, 90 days, etc.”
    • What makes employees successful in your company”
  • Interactions: what questions do you have about the team at this company? What do you hope to see in your interactions during the shadow?
    • Does your company do paired programming
  • Objects: what questions do you have about the code or the product?
    • What programming languages do you use
  • Users: what questions do you have about how the company interacts with their users?
    • none
  1. After the Job Shadow, reflect on the same questions; what are your takeaways from the shadow?
  • Activities: what was engaging to the person/people you shadowed?
    • He was very detailed in explaining what his position in the company was
  • Environment: what did you notice about how they talked about the culture and environment of this company?
    • He did not have much advice since this was his first job as a junior programmer
  • Interactions: what did you notice about your interactions with this person/people?
    • Everyone was very kind and made a point to mention that their job is to help their customers
  • Objects: what did you learn about their approach to code and/or product development?
    • He demonstrated a few bits of code but ended up getting stuck and mentioned he wanted to solve the problem without eyes watching
  • Users: what did you learn about their approach to their users?
    • They were very understanding since their customers are all students so they are a middle man to help people afford an education
  • What are your main takeaways from the shadow? How will you use this information to help you with your job search strategy?
    • A company that sets out to help underrepresented people are typically kind and care about their employees
  1. Interview Prep:
  • Pick a successful project and write about it with the STAR method (What was the situation/scenario of the project? What was the task/target of the project? What action steps did you take? What were the results?):
    • My successful project would be the Rancid Tomatillo project. This project was centered around displaying movies and their specs to the viewer in a satisfying way. The target was to be able to filter through movies
  • Write about a time you failed and what you learned from that experience:
    • most recently I had been working on a personal project and found my biggest struggle was using and testing local storage. I learned how to better understand local storage and how to test it using Cypress.
  • Write about how you've approached working with a team using a specific example:
    • Working with a team I had found I typically take a leader role when no one else chooses to take the role. Working on my most recent group project (3 person project) I found my two partners were not comfortable making schedules or making hard decisions. I stood up, made schedules, handed out responsibilities, and being the project manager.
  • What other stories will you prepare to share?
    • how I handled a partner that did not want to participate or show up to work on the project and how I picked up the slack to help my team complete our project on time
  • Do some research into your top companies' tech stacks; what do you already know? What can you compare to your own learning? What do you need to learn more about?
    • I have seen a pattern of typescript being used in companies and have started to learn it in my personal time to better be prepared.
  • Using this interview prep resource doc, pick out at least 3 resources you will use to prepare for interviews as well as 3 behavioral questions you could practice:
  • why would i want to work at their company?
    • I would answer this question by bringing light to how my morals and standards align with the companies.
