Packing

Packing

For air travel: conferences, 10-day trips, etc. (Based on https://github.com/b-meson/packing.)

Before you travel

  • Double check: Date, Time (a.m. or p.m.), location of airport
  • Is a passport or visa needed?
  • Is FX (foreign currency) needed?
  • Check travel situation on the ground (light rail, trains, availablity of Uber / Lyft, etc)
  • Check weather at destination 1-2 days before

Physical

For any given day, bring about 15% more tshirts, 50% more socks. Example, if the trip is for 1 week, pack 8 tshirts, and 11 pairs of socks.

  • T-shirts
  • Button-up shirts
  • Pants
  • Pajamas/shorts
  • Undergarments
  • Socks (very important)
  • Jacket (depends on weather)
  • Boots (if needed)

In a smaller bag:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Any meds
  • Shave gear
  • Comb

Electronics

  • Laptop(s) (depending on security situation, reasons for travel)
  • Laptop charger
  • Phones(s)
  • Phone charger
  • External battery pack
  • USB mouse
  • USB devices, as needed
  • YubiKeys, depends on security situation

During Travel

  • Books (not too many!)
  • Download a movie for the flight (depends on length)
  • Headphones
  • Light jacket / hoodie
  • Sleeping pad
  • Pillow

Security

  • Move all valuables to neccessary locations
  • Lock all doors and windows on the way out
  • Check stove/oven
  • Leave spare key with necessary individuals
  • Shut down and backup all encrypted laptops
  • Move all encrypted backups
  • Leave travel details with trusted individuals

Misc

  • Check: phone, keys, wallet
  • Check: PASSPORT

Return Trip

  • Mail postcards
  • Gifts (if needed)
