"NatWest Group (Formally RBS) is the largest business and commercial bank in the UK. It offers market-leading digital capabilities combined with expert human support for personal customers. And it provides banking services for around one in four businesses in the UK and Ireland. NatWest's goal is to become a 'relationship bank in a digital world\" NatWest last presented at DevOps Enterprise Summit 2019, the Hero’s Journey. The journey continues today as Agile and DevOps principles and practices are adopted to improve productivity, creativity and competitive advantage. “Organise the people, organise the work, speed up the work” is the mantra of improvement across the bank, inspired in 2018 by the pan-bank Ways of Working improvement programme. NatWest Group have embarked on an ambitious project, implementing DevOps principles, practices and capabilities across a multi-organisational landscape spanning over 7000 engineering staff. At DevOps Enterprise Summit, we would like to share our journey, the impact we have seen and the roadmap ahead with a view to sharing with others who may be just starting their own Community of Practice, and to connect with others who we can learn from.",

"A digital platform built for the industrial internet. GE needed a solution for its own massive infrastructure and product portfolio, but so did every industrial organization on earth, and nobody was filling the gap. It was a massive opportunity, but it turned into a nightmare that has nearly sunk a 130 year old global powerhouse. From the outset, it seemed GE did everything right. They committed to a ton of spending, executive support, a compelling vision, a lean approach, Silicon Valley culture, and learning from their own needs. In 2015, there was a DOES presentation on GE platform engineering, presenting a bold vision and notable progress. In 2016, GE predicted $15 billion in software sales by 2020, about half of that revenue was expected to be from Predix By 2020, GE Digital revenue was just $1 billion How did it all go wrong, and what can we learn to avoid the same fate? We know what leads to failure, we even know what good looks like, but what has been missing is how to get to good. I've been studying GE's case as I write an upcoming book on enterprise evolution. Using GE as a reference, this talk will present a clear, actionable model for understanding unique, complex ecosystems, identifying the highest value targets, and facilitating collaborative action.",

{:description
"One of the biggest hurdles to implementing continuous delivery and DevOps in industrial environments – dealing with milestones / macroscopic quality gates – can be overcome with a continuous quality assurance approach that applies the \"green to green\" and \"shift left\" paradigms not only to software, but also to non-software artifacts. In an industrial environment, software delivery requires much more than just working software. To formally release a change and deploy it into production requires many further non-software artifacts that cannot be covered by the continuous integration tool chain, no matter how sophisticated it is. However, using the classical milestone / macroscopic quality gate process is no longer an option, as this limits the deployment frequency to values that are outside the range of the desired target. Therefore, a rethinking of the release process is required. This presentation provides insights into our experience with several implementations of a new approach to analyzing and tracking non-software quality criteria through the introduction of a continuous conformance concept. This concept applies the \"green to green\" and \"shift left\" paradigms – well established in the software space – also to the non-software artifacts required to release and deploy a software change. Combined with a continuous delivery pipeline, this results in a continuous quality assurance flow that also enables industrial enterprises to take advantage of the many opportunities and benefits that arise from continuous enhancements of their products and services while maintaining their high quality standards.",

"A Security Champions program is key to a modern cybersecurity strategy. Learn how to start your own. Known vulnerabilities are a fact of life, especially with open source software. Cyber Security Intelligence tracked over 18,000 CVEs and at least 66 Zero-Day Vulnerabilities in 2021. According to the Sonatype 2020 DevSecOps Community Survey, 24% of organizations surveyed revealed a breach within one of their web applications in the prior 12 months. The average cost of a data breach was $4.24 million, according to the IBM 2021 Cost of a Data Breach Report. The only way to keep up with the fast pace and demands of cybersecurity today is to scale up the security expertise of your technical workforce. This talk explains why setting up a Security Champions program is such an important part of an overall security strategy. Then it goes into detail on how to get your own Security Champions program running, the realistic costs of such a program, and what benefits you can expect from it. We’ll talk about grassroots programs at three companies: IBM, Red Hat, and NatWest Group. A Security Champions program is repeatable, cost effective, and can be applied to a broad range of industries. Attendees will come away with a step by step approach that can improve cybersecurity practices at their own companies.",

"Organize Around Value doesn’t mean organizing around systems. That’s just new silos. Value must flow horizontally through a value stream, not vertically through the development functions and processes. Value Stream Management isn’t a tool or platform. It’s a set of practices that drive operational efficiency. It’s not something that you achieve, or complete. It’s a continuous process as your market and operational context continue to evolve. For large organizations, the level of interaction and complexity between the different steps of their value streams have led to slowdowns in operation. Therefore we need to introduce another layer to effectively communicate and organize around the value we create. Operational Value Streamlets allow us to better understand the processes we use to create the individual components of a large or complex system. Value Streamlets are smaller constructs that can be reasonably organized around to gain operational efficiencies while focusing on customer outcomes.",

"In the new remote-first and hybrid workplace, many organizations are struggling to catch up with new tooling and ways of working. Many are discovering for the first time that the physical office was covering up poorly defined teams and poorly defined areas of focus, threatening their DevOps transformation efforts and the overall health and success of their business. In this talk, learn how the Team API can be an effective tool to improve the experience of teams that need to interact in a remote setting. What information do they need? Where can they reach us? How can we help them? And how can we evolve the Team API to reduce misunderstandings and turn confrontational situations into productive, valuable insights? The authors of the acclaimed book Team Topologies - Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais - explain and then simulate the use of the Team API pattern using a role play scenario between two teams. They show how an evolving Team API can help to turn confrontations into positive interactions, clarifying expectations and helping teams to work effectively in a remote-first or hybrid context. In their new book, Remote Team Interactions Workbook, published by IT Revolution, Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais, coauthors of the highly popular Team Topologies, provide proven patterns for a successful remote-first approach to teams. Using simple tools for dependency tracking and patterns from Team Topologies, such as the Team API, organizations will find that well-defined team interactions are key to effective IT delivery in the remote-first world.",

Delivering reliable software depends on a disciplined and efficient software development lifecycle. And fast, reliable software development depends on automated testing. Ponsse is one of Europe’s leading forestry equipment manufacturers. In 2017, we set out to build a completely modern digital infrastructure for our equipment, the Ponsse Manager Application. This application helps machinery contractors explore working conditions, locations, maintenance needs and vehicle history. To succeed, our software development teams knew that we needed to adopt modern and effective ways of working. Our technology stack crosses multiple clouds from Azure to Mulesoft to Salesforce, leading to sophisticated challenges in ensuring all the systems work together well. Learn how we developed a focus on automated testing as a foundation for reliable software delivery, and how we’ve been able to progress so far in reducing costs, increasing reliability, and extending the power and confidence of our testing teams.",

"The environmental pressure on software has dramatically changed in few years, both in quality and quantity. Security is the main force but other dynamics can be seen, the adoption of agile, shortest product cycles, and more. As a consequence the software is no more written once and run many times: it must be updated continuously. If we, as an industry, continue to use the classic category of Technical Debt, IT will be crushed by the forces at hand, pulling the business side along. I propose to introduce a new term for this phenomenon: Technical Inflation. It is not simply to mark the difference but to help discuss and explain to other stakeholders what is happening on the technical side and the effect on the entire business. The new perspective impacts how we plan and budget, how we manage changes and automation, and the need to excel on engineering to save the bottom line.",

"This workshop is designed to be hands-on experiences on how developers can get started with scaffolding serverless functions projects using Quarkus, a new Kubernetes native Java framework with familiar tools (e.g. CLI, Maven, Gradel). The workshop covers deploying service functions to AWS Lambda, optimizing the functions, making them portable across multiple serverless platforms ( e.g., AWS Lambda, Azure Function, Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes Knative), and using the latest handy command-line tool (e.g. Kn func) to enable a Buildpack for function development & deployment in minutes. Lab participants will be provided a free sandbox for serverless deployments. https://github.com/RedHat-Middleware-Workshops/enter-serverless-functions/blob/main/README.md This hands-on lab showcases how quickly developers can create cloud-native microservice projects using Quarkus. "What if the same principles that govern IT systems could be used to explain individual and collective human behaviors? What if those same principles governed molecules, evolution, and the Internet? Seventy years before people started breaking down silos between Dev and Ops, a few of the best minds in science gathered in New York at the Macy conferences to discuss and discern whether common principles might underlie medicine, physics, psychology, and other disciplines. Their insights, under the banner of Cybernetics, formed the foundations for artificial intelligence, computer science, robotics, and a huge range of business and sociological theories. Expertise can lead to isolation, but cross-disciplinary conversations can unlock profound insights and simple models that are broadly applicable. We’ll introduce the ten principles of cybernetics as a lens through which we can understand both digital and human systems and how they evolve. We’ll share practical illustrations of each principle and describe how these principles are at the root of some of the most effective techniques in the software industry.",

"In March 2020, the UK’s tax department HMRC was faced with a complex problem: how to improve the accuracy, reliability, and truth of information about customer activities, in order to counter fraud AND adapt to the speeds that the situation required, ensuring that every claim was reviewed in 72 hrs.? As the UK government announced statutory sick pay, a job retention scheme, and self-employment income support, the Customer Insights team at HMRC began to transform the Customer Insights Platform (CIP). CIP is an internal platform built on top of AWS, which provides highly available transaction monitoring and auditing to internal customers across HMRC. This session tells the story of how the Customer Insights team transformed CIP from data storage to data product capabilities, and built an intelligent risking service to bake automated risking decisions into customer activities. Millions of claims were submitted by taxpayers, and every single one was automatically assessed for fraud detection, supporting the work that HMRC fraud investigators were doing in very difficult circumstances. This was a revolution in the speed of data analysis within HMRC. Meanwhile, the thinking of the Customer Insights team was transformed, from data storage to data as a product at scale. This session will include details of CIP architecture, the delivery mindset of the customer insights team, and working practices that delivered such successful outcomes that the Customer Insights team received a personal note of gratitude from the Prime Minister, and CIP became an multi-award winning platform at the 2021 UK IT awards.",

"DevOps principles drove Uswitch's technological change and growth over the last 10 years; we've increased our release frequency from 25 releases a year to more than 50 an hour, and outperformed our industry as a result. Platforms are a critical part of our strategy, powering the next phase of our growth as we scale our business further. We've leaned on our product-centric organisational principles to guide the way we build, and operate our platforms. This talk covers key learnings from the creation of our first platform in 2017 to today and some of the pitfalls we've had to overcome: from adoption and growth, skill depletion, cross-charging and support models.",

"By 2022, IDC has predicted that 65% of the global GDP will be digitally transformed. Two-thirds of the products and services that you pay for will be driven by software. There has never been a more important time to foster developer productivity, but many of our methods have not evolved. In this keynote style talk you will learn why DPE is the most important development in the software engineering world since the introduction of Agile and DevOps concepts and tools. DPE is a new software development practice that uses acceleration technologies to speed up the software build and test process and data analytics to improve developer efficiencies by as much as 10x. The ultimate aim is to achieve faster feedback cycles, more reliable and actionable data, and a highly satisfying developer experience. Justin Reock, Field CTO and Chief Evangelist at Gradle is pioneering DPE as a practice and set of technologies and is one of the world’s leading advocates. Specifically, Justin will provide an overview of the key concepts and tools, business impact on key business objectives like time-to-market, cost and quality, the business case for DPE, and the role of AI/ML in DPE moving forward.",

"As part of a full-stack scrum team, security is an essential responsibility of the development team to achieve high level of software quality and deliver a secured experience to customers. In the current development cycle, Most of security testing is done at the end & performed by a separate team. With that being said, I learnt from my experience working within bank aka highly regulated industry & playing role of engineering coach / engineering leader that one of security testing especially Pen-test can be very expensive and usually only performed once or twice a year. This posed a lot of challenges with respect to time, cost and resource efficiency in delivering products. The reality is that companies spend money on those security tools to run tests because they are well- accepted by auditors and compliance regulations, and not because they are effective for reducing risk or controlling costs. Due to cost and time constraints, PEN-TEST is only conducted once or twice a year. It leaves the product with new application code untested for months. Being with Open-Source Engineering mindset , this is where I started to solve this business problem. To solve this challenge out within my organization, I collaborate with security team by building north star vision as well as socialize the concept of devsecops where majorly focussed on laying out shift left test strategy , utilizing open source security tools & increase awareness of security testing within technologist/engineers which indirectly building culture of devsecops. Engineers are not engineers but now they hold knowledge of security vulnerabilities & resolve as demanded. Exploring & Leveraging open source security tools still pose challenges in our business as it needs double layer of security. We all are actively working on it to solve this challenge out in collaborative way .",

"Integration testing is a new challenge for developers and operators to validate functionalities, features, and business requirements in a local development environment as it works exactly the same as the production using databases and messaging brokers based on containers and Kubernetes. It can be also a big roadblock to accelerating DevOps adoption along with the inner and outer loop development lifecycle. To solve this challenge, you might think of Testcontainers, a framework to provide common lightweight test services like databases that can run on a container engine. But, developers still need to inject particular code and configurations into applications for enabling Testcontainers. What if the Java framework offers an out-of-the-box feature that automatically starts containers for the integration tests and developers don’t even need to configure anything since the container(e.g., Postgres, Kafka) is automatically wired to the cloud-native microservices. In this talk, we will explore Quarkus Dev Services for prod-like integration testing as well as live coding development while developers implement cloud-native microservices for PostgreSQL transactions and Kafka integration automatically with zero configurations.",

"CROZ is a mid-sized professional services company with around 300 tech-oriented people. We use our technical, domain, and organizational expertise to help our clients build better products and achieve their business goals. *About CROZ* Our mission is to provide superb and professional IT solutions to enterprise customers by ensuring IT service whose level of quality surpasses customer demands. We do this by maintaining and growing a sustainable community of capable, constantly growing, and accomplished employees, along with satisfied enterprise customers who keep coming back to us. Our vision is to become the first option for every complex organization that wants to have a superb IT solution. We want to be recognized as a reliable partner who promptly solves challenges in integration, modernization, team organization, and in development of new systems. We operate across Europe with some of the customers located in North America and the Middle East. Our customers mostly come from financial, telco and government sectors. We are particularly proud of the collaboration with companies such as Nationwide, Santander, HSBC, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds Bank, Raiffeisen Bank International, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom Group, and Telefonica. Apart from these industry sectors, we are active in other sectors as well, with customers such as Howco, Bosch, Scania, European Space Agency, WestJet, Airbus, AGCO, Baker Hughes, and BP plc. Throughout the years, we have successfully delivered more than 600 mostly enterprise-level projects with customers in 18 countries. There aren't many industries we haven't tackled and we are proud that every new customer remains our trusted and long-term partner. *The problem we encountered* The flow of value is important in all organizations, but especially so in service organizations that are by the virtue of their business model more susceptible to disturbances in the flow. Why is this so? Service organizations help their clients achieve business goals. Unlike their product-led peers, they don't rely on passive income streams based on subscription models. To maintain a steady income stream, service organizations need to continuously sell and deliver their services. Much like sharks that need to be in constant movement to keep the water flowing over their gills and prevent them from suffocating, service organizations must constantly sell and deliver their services to keep the cash flow healthy. And they need to do it most efficiently! Managing a healthy flow of value in service organizations includes challenges not present at product organizations and stemming from the fact that service organizations don't work on their own but always for client organizations. Client organizations can stop ongoing initiatives, create completely new ones, and (depending on the collaboration level) significantly influence the technical solution and ways of working. All these factors can significantly deteriorate the flow of value in service organizations which is why they need to closely monitor the flow and promptly remove impediments that get in the way. Work variability in service organizations is much higher than in their product-led peers with more predictable roadmaps. *What did we do to overcome the problem?* For optimal performance, the sales funnel of service organizations shouldn't be empty, but it also shouldn't be full, providing them exactly enough slack to help clients when they need it and to sharpen their skills for the future to come. Balancing between those two states while staying true to its true north value proposition and long-term socio-technical vision is an art that happens on several levels in the organization and requires constant fine-tuning. These organizational levels are best described by Klaus Leopold as \"flight levels\". In this talk, we will acknowledge the idiosyncrasies of service organizations and share our challenges and experience of setting up \"flight levels\" and ways of working that support the flow of value on all levels in the service organization. We will share how several seemingly small practices and behaviors on the team and organizational levels came together in a high-definition puzzle that is driving our organizational growth. Krešimir Musa, CTO at CROZ, describes the impact that newly established focus on flow has on our business growth: \"As a service organization, we're susceptible to high work variability. Historically, this work variability has caused us a lot of problems in terms of increased WIP, missed deadlines, high context switching, burnouts, lack of slack time for improvements, and a decrease in applying foundational technical practices. By better controlling what is entering our production funnel, we have eliminated the work not aligned with our strategy and redirected that capacity to our strategic projects, improving our delivery process and building our capabilities. Managing flow is not something that can be done centrally. It is necessary to recognize all organizational levels on which the work flows and grow leadership on all those levels. A leadership that is flow-aware and actively manages it. Growing flow-aware leadership is not easy, but when you succeed the results are staggering! In our case, better flow management released enough capacity for new strategic directions and R&D activities that further resulted in a 224% increase in the number of new initiatives on strategic markets.\"",

"The world is full of exciting examples of how DevOps can make a huge difference to organisations but the examples are often small tech start-ups or the bespoke software development teams of large organizations. However, many organizations don’t fit into these categories. They are large sized (1000-5000 people) but not very large. They have a very heterogenous IT environment with a mixture of bespoke software development, SaaS solutions, managed service, IT outsource and their own infrastructure build. Their technology and transformation teams have to cope with a huge amount of complexity without the deep bench strength of the largest organizations. And while many of the existing DevOps and agile approaches aren’t always explicitly applicable, these organisations still have an urgent strategic need to increase the pace at which they deliver technology based change. This presentation will show how Leeds Building Society is tackling this challenge and what we’ve learned along the way.",

"Schlumberger is a leading global digital solutions provider, deploying groundbreaking technologies to enable performance and sustainability that are crucial for the global energy industry and their customers. Schlumberger started on its cloud journey in 2016, resulting in the industry leading DELFI* cognitive E&P environment, where we moved the oil and gas E&P (exploration and production) lifecycle into the cloud. The E&P industry is highly regulated, so to manage the risks associated with handling customer data, the preference was for on-premises systems. To update these systems, typically an annual release cycle was used, with one major release, followed by a series of smaller updates. It is vitally important that studies of assets are comparable over time, so that different E&P strategies can be compared. The annual release cycle supported this well, as it provided long-term consistency. The software product development governance strategy used a fixed set of phases with stage gates between each and an agile iterative development approach within each stage. For each release, a formal ceremony with senior management was held, to review the release-ready criteria and the stage’s results prior to approving the release. This strategy worked very well. With the move to the cloud, there is the need for continuous delivery and continuous compliance. With deployments happening on-demand, the existing governance strategy did not fit with the cloud-based ways of working. We will describe how we developed and rolled out a new software development governance strategy called season-based governance (SBG) for use by all our cloud-hosted products. SBG is a governance process that supports high alignment and high autonomy and has the notion of a set period (season), which is independent of the product release cycle to deliver value to our end users as frequently as we wish. This is enabling us to build, deliver, and operate on-demand the cloud-hosted DELFI E&P workflows securely in all geographies. We will cover the guiding principles, how this supports the DevOps ways of working, and how we incorporate end-user feedback at all stages of the development cycle. We are driving our software delivery and operational performance capability improvements by focusing on the DORA metrics. We will also describe the tooling ecosystem to support this, how we are upskilling the organisation and discuss the challenges of changing the organizational mindset. *Mark of Schlumberger",

I designed the system so that it supports multiple development methodologies i.e. Kanban, Scrum and Agile. These tools and practices are enabling the business to take advantage of modern cloud and DevOps ways of working, giving us a commercial advantage. As a passionate believer in continuous learning and having fun doing this, I ran an Oxford, UK programming talks group and have organised more than 75 public talks and social sessions. "Many businesses aiming for business agility start their change initiative by implementing a 1:1 copy of the Spotify model, introduce Agile processes to manage the suddenly fast number of teams and apply some new technologies in hopes of establishing a more successful “DevOps” way of working. These efforts often fall short. This talk explains how to run a synchronized and balanced change initiative, respecting organizational value streams addressing the six topics influencing business agility, being 'organization', 'architecture', 'processes', 'culture', 'automation' and 'measurements'.",

"In today’s digital world, organisations are at greater risk of damaging data leaks and cyberattacks. Developers are constantly faced with new challenges due to the increasing reliance on technology and proliferation of open source code. The pandemic has forced businesses to develop new applications and software at rapid pace to enable remote work to continue. As a result, developers have strongly been affected, with 83% of people working in the sector reporting burnout. For businesses to become more efficient and successfully retain talent, they will need to automate as many processes as possible. DevSecOps expands collaboration and ensures that development, security, and operations are fully and continually integrated into the software development lifecycle (SDLC). Automation is a critical component of DevSecOps that accelerates software development and helps to find and eliminate vulnerabilities at every point in the development lifecycle. This session will discuss the importance of creating a culture that embraces DevSecOps and the many tools available for developer training, code scanning, and formulating a stronger cybersecurity strategy. The session will conclude with a demonstration on how to integrate Veracode’s security scanning into GitLab. Key Takeaways • Understand how Veracode’s integration with GitLab optimises the efforts of developers while learning how to integrate Veracode into each phase of the pipeline in GitLab • Examine the benefits of automation and solutions developers can implement in their day-to-day • Learn about leading cybersecurity trends and the benefits of Everything as Code (EAC) when it is combined with the rapid deployment of code (i.e., CI/CD)",

"Hey you! You’re exposed! We know you are a fraud! You’re don’t deserve any of the success you’ve achieved! Do you recognize the fear of being exposed as a fraud? I do. Even as I prepare and present this session, I feel that you’ll expose me of not being worthy of talking to you. With fifteen years in IT and a successful career as a world-class infrastructure engineer, a speaker at many industry conferences, a blogger, analyst and technical marketing freelancer for Silicon Valley Startups and a CTO of a 1200+ infra and software engineering company, I can definitely say I suffer from impostor syndrome, and by extension, perfectionism. And it doesn’t go away with success. The opposite seems to be true, actually. I’ve learned to harness it, spending a lot of time way out of my comfort zone to figure out how to come to terms with it and use it for good. Maybe the fact that I experience the syndrome makes me more humble, which makes me more valuable as a leader. I’m here to show the little things I did differently every day: 1. How being kind to yourself is key. Forgive, don’t judge. Accept who you are. 2. Learn about your internal convictions and expose these to the world authenticly and honestly. 3. How complimenting yourself and others goes a long way 4. Build a case for yourself by keep notes of people saying nice things about you 5. Self-doubt is a powerful tool as a leader, if used consciously 6. Focus on (professional) relationships, not on technical merit 7. Harness feedback, even it’s scary With these small, incremental improvements, I now live in a self-inflicted, perpetually non-existing comfort zone. I’m constantly in the imposter zone, because I’m constantly doing new things, learning new skills, meeting new people. And I love it! It has brought me many smaller and larger victories, a career that’s led me to new and unexpected ventures and most importantly, a network of friends and relationships I otherwise would never have had.",

"The requirements of a secure software supply chain which is compliant with industry best practices, compliance / regulatory standards and specific customer requirements is becoming more and more difficult for individual product teams to create, enhance and maintain. Uniqueness in how each product's CI / CD automation is created in a large engineering organization lends itself to countless hours of duplicate effort as each product team enhances their CI / CD pipeline to meet the next standard. This is the problem the IBM CIO organization is solving by providing a common CI / CD platform focused on the developer experience. "- Desired outcome: Attendees will understand the most important areas to focus on in an ecosystem based around centralized platforms. These focus areas include: defining the scope of the platform upfront, starting with an MVP, balancing feature development and resilience, and designing your organization to staff platform support. - We’ll share the missteps and pitfalls we encountered with our first attempt at a microservice platform, the improvements we made on our second iteration, and what we’ve learned to apply to our newer platforms – for AWS lambda, Kubernetes, and our emerging intermediary business technology platform. - With the rise of building shared development platforms and APIs, there is a need to ensure applications running on the platform are built of resilience and that their potential for failure is self-contained. We can no longer predict who is consuming the shared platforms that are offered and how they will utilize them, but we have taken a variety of approaches to validate and even enforce that teams are “playing nicely in the sandbox” with co-tenants of the same platform, and to prevent a wide blast radius in the case of application incidents. - The intended audience for this talk would be members of technical teams and leaders of technical teams, with no specific seniority or experience level in mind. It would not be particularly relevant to non-IT professionals (including non-technical product owners and executives).",

However fast forward to 2022 and the world has changed, we live in a digital ecosystem where physical military systems are all powered by software. Many papers propose we are behind our adversaries in modern software development which can impact our military advantage during a time of global unrest. The Department of Defense (DoD) is doubling down on DevSecOps with more than 20 software factories across the DoD. Over the last 3 years we have experienced more change across the DoD in how we build systems than we have in the last 25 years. "Accelerating delivery cycles through DevOps tools and practices is the topic of our time. In fact, according to the “Accelerate State of DevOps 2021” report by DORA, the percentage of organizations reporting “Elite” DevOps performance has grown by more than 370% from 2018 to 2021. How can you measure and improve DevOps in your organization? The well-known DORA metrics are certainly a good first step, but for the “big leap” you need more than that…. Combining DORA metrics with analytics and AI/ML can help you release better quality software more frequently and enable reliable customer experiences. Join us for this webinar featuring Matthias Zieger, Technical Director at Digital.ai, and learn more about: Introduction to DORA metrics and what they do (and don’t) tell you Using analytics to understand not just “what” is occurring but why How AI/ML models can help you identify and eliminate the root cause of DevOps risk factors Automating Change and Release governance with metrics and AI/ML Digital.ai customer case studies",

"The world of application development has changed dramatically in recent years. Monolithic applications have been replaced by services interconnected through APIs. Applications distributed across multiple services are often developed on multi-cloud infrastructures and developers and DevOps have the ability to choose the best tools to implement within their technology stack. In many companies, C-Level figures are realizing that IT teams dealing with application development use a myriad of different tools and solutions for data processing and analysis, observability and monitoring. , security and networking, particularly at the application level. The PlatformOps approach allows you to give order to this situation, bringing a real cultural change within the organization. PlatformOps has spread with the increasing popularity and increasing use by companies of the DevOps methodology. This approach aims to simplify the processes involved as the DevOps practices in use by the company increase, allowing developers to focus on application development, rather than internal processes and tools, in order to always offer a better service to its customers. But how can you do this? In order to scale the use of the DevOps methodology and retain the related knowledge, it is essential to rethink the structure of the DevOps teams: DevOps practices must be thought of as products and services of which the application development teams are users. The essence of the PlatformOps approach is precisely this: by using this method and creating a real dedicated team (the PlatformOps team), companies are able to provide a self-service platform that allows their developers to develop code in a way that fast, reliable and safe. At the same time, this ensures that best practices, governance and access to the latest technologies are integrated. With the use of PlatformOps, companies have the ability to scale the DevOps capabilities of their development teams and, very importantly, they are able to create and maintain a real DevOps culture within themselves that they can make available to their people. With this in mind, the Krateo PlatformOps solution was created, an open source automation platform entirely managed by Kiratech to simplify the creation and management of resources on any infrastructure and in self-service mode from a single control panel, aggregating important information for the user and standardizing otherwise fragmented and poorly focused workflows.",

"This case study describes how we leveraged serverless technology and the AWS serverless application model (SAM) to support the needs of virtual training classes for a major US Federal agency. Our firm was excited to be selected as the main training partner to help a major US Federal government agency roll out Agile and DevOps processes across an organization comprising more than 1500 people. And then the pandemic hit—and what was to have been a series of in-person classes turned 100% virtual! We created a set of fully populated docker images containing all of the test data, plugins, and scenarios required for the student exercises. For our initial implementation, we simply pre-loaded our docker images into elastic beanstalk and then replicated them as many times as needed to provide the necessary number of instances for a given class. While this worked out fine at first, we found a number of shortcomings as we scaled up to more students and more classes. Eventually we came up with a much easier solution using serverless technology: we stood up a single page application that could kickoff tasks using AWS step functions to run docker images in elastic container service, all running under AWS Fargate. This application is a perfect fit for serverless technology and describing our evolution to serverless and SAM may help you gain insights into how these technologies may be beneficial in your situation.",

We will also be presented with some of Eriks memories of working in large enterprises, memories he's not necessarily fond of. "Keptn, a CNCF project, is currently being adopted by DevOps & SRE teams around the world helping them reduce custom delivery and operations scripting by up to 90%. A prominent local example is Raiffeisen Software who are automating their release validation process with Keptn. Keptn is a control plane that runs on Kubernetes (such as AKS, EKS, OpenShift ...). At its core it uses an event-driven engine connecting your existing DevOps tools (Azure DevOps, GitHub, Jenkins, JMeter, Prometheus, Terraform, Jira … ). At the core of the orchestration it follows SRE practices by automatically evaluating SLOs (Service Level Objectives) to make data driven decisions on how to orchestrate your delivery and operational processes! Join this session where Andreas Grabner, Keptn maintainer, explain the core use cases, how the cloud native community is adopting it and how you can get started in minutes.",

"DevOps tools usually do not exist alone in organizations. In the recent years enterprises are using a plethora of different tools – for monitoring, managing IT processes, operating their services desks, etc. Since DevOps is interconnected with all these other processes, for an organization to effectively manage its IT operations, the tools being used need to be synchronized. Connecting systems easily and without any code is becoming key to overseeing your entire IT Operations. Automating flows between DevOps and other software eliminates manual work, risks of duplications, corrupted data and delays in information transfer. In this session, Daniel Kalchev, Product Manager at ZigiWave, will explain the key things you need to consider when integrating your DevOps system with ITSM and monitoring tools and what to do when you have a more complex use case, but need an integration quickly. Join us to see how to connect Jira with monitoring and service desk in less than 10 minutes, without any code or scripts.",

"The history of computer science has seen the development of higher and higher layers of abstraction. Software has evolved from machine code, to assembly language, to C, to Java, to Kotlin. Hardware has evolved from custom-built computers, to commodity servers, to virtual machines, to cloud servers, to containers. Every new layer of abstraction hides enough complexity that we feel, for a time, that building and managing these systems has become trivial. Low code SaaS platforms are one of the next big layers of abstraction. Systems like Salesforce were born in the cloud, built for non-coders, and manage infrastructure for you behind the scenes. Millions of people are now building their innovation on these platforms using little or no code. The mantras of the SaaS world are power and ease. But there's a problem with easy. Easy means fast. And fast means more. And more means complex. Salesforce, for example, has hundreds of thousands of corporate customers. The largest among them are managing millions of customizations in the form of source code and configuration. While some low-code SaaS systems have in-built methods for managing configuration, traditional \"DevOps\" tools and practices are generally designed for managing custom applications and aren't designed for SaaS systems. The fast-growing world of low-code platforms desperately needs ways to manage the emerging complexity. What does it look like to apply DevOps practices and principles to this very different technology? What are the challenges and mitigations, and what does this move to low-code platforms tell us about the future of enterprise software development?",

"A barrage of software philosophies have hit the industry over the last few years, all claiming to reduce friction in digital transformation. But what does that mean, how does it impact your design philosophy, and where does open source play into all of this? We'll talk about the roots of DevOps in the Theory of Constraints, how 12-Factor principles can guide your microservice and cloud migration refactor efforts, and how building an optimal strategy for the use of open source within your organization can tie all of these concepts together. Finally, we'll look at the future of DevOps and how Developer Productivity Engineering is evolving to address the next set of bottlenecks, those hiding within the developer experience. Justin Reock, Chief Evangelist and Field CTO of Gradle, Inc, will take you through a visually-guided tour of modern DevOps and how we came to it, so that you never again have to utter those fallacious and all-to-common words: \"There are lots of definitions of DevOps.\"",

"The arc42 architecture template tempts to work through all chapters from top to bottom. However, an architecture review reveals a more sensible approach to developing software architecture. First, the in-scope and out-of-scope of the project is defined, then quality attributes are recorded, and finally concrete quality scenarios are derived. The documentation of these results in arc42 poses many tasks and questions: How do I develop architecture decisions, quality attributes and quality scenarios? And how do I document them efficiently? In this talk, we will use the Docs-as-Code approach to show how we work efficiently with the arc42 template and make the documentation available to everyone as a microsite. "A world of accelerating change demands a new generation of management with the skills to drive decisive action and elevate performance. Managers tasked with delivering results collide with peers whose conflicting goals, perspectives, and incentives freeze progress and create a glacial pace of change. New thinking and practices are needed to act in alignment. You can't thaw the frozen middle overnight, you can't copy-and-paste a solution, and you can't do it alone. To collaborate effectively you need to create a shared map of the territory, and you need to pick your battles. This talk presents profound yet practical applications of systems thinking, psychology, and organizational design. On that foundation we share a step-by-step guide to visualizing the outcomes, processes, and dependencies that can tie you down or help you succeed. Co-create maps of the hidden relations and interactions that constrain your teams - maps that everyone can align with and act on. Replace deadlocks with shared insights. Reveal exactly what to do next. Learn how to reach across the whitespace in your org chart to replace friction with flow. We’ll work through a case from a financial services enterprise to show the power of clear perspective to unlock innovation and performance.",

"- Desired outcome: Attendees will understand the practices of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Chaos Game Days, and Chaos Fire Drills. They’ll be able to clearly articulate the purpose of these exercises, when it is appropriate to use each technique, and how to effectively co-ordinate and run them within their own organizations. - We will explain the differences and value propositions of all three techniques (FMEAs, Game Days, and Fire Drills), and share case studies of each, focusing on the value we have seen at Vanguard and our path to operationalizing these approaches, from our earliest attempts, through stages of iteration, to broad adoption. We’ll include stories of the challenges we encountered along the way and how we overcame them. - The chaos stories to be shared in this talk are only a small fraction of the experimentation happening today at Vanguard. The teams involved are not isolated in pockets of the organization working on low-priority internal tools, but instead working on some of our most critical systems, including the Advice platform and the externally facing balances and holdings pages. To accommodate the 25-minute time slot, this talk will not get into a detailed overview of Chaos Engineering concepts, nor will it discuss architectural or implementation details. Instead, it will focus on the types of sessions we conduct, and the frameworks we leverage, to organize around the practice of chaos engineering. I've given detailed talks on Vanguard's internally developed chaos engineering platform in the past (including at SRECon 2020), but this proposal includes new content: real examples of architecture analyses and chaos experiments (game days and fire drills) that Vanguard has run. - The intended audience for this talk would be members of technical teams and leaders of technical teams, with no specific seniority or experience level in mind. It would not be particularly relevant to non-IT professionals (including non-technical product owners and executives).",

"The recent, unexpected pandemic has left millions of people feeling hopeless, lost, and anxious. Never before in modern history have people been as fearful and worried about their health or the health of their loved ones. The uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus and forced isolation has caused families to panic, citizens to rebel, and cities to protest in widespread anger and anxiety. With headlines blaring more cynical news each passing day, many of us are left wondering, “What is going to happen next?” Fortunately, in order to handle this uncertainty, there are many things you can do—even in the face of unprecedented crises. In this webinar, Bill Wooditch, serial entrepreneur and history buff, has studied how hundreds of great leaders over the past thousand years transcended the worst of times. Through his research, he has identified patterns that the heroes of history embodied and implemented which he has included in his Wall Street Journal Bestselling book, “Fail More.” A common thread that binds every leader to greatness is found in their ability to navigate the future with certainty. Their secret is part psychology and understanding the past as a guide, which we often refer to today as data. In this webinar, you will learn how to leverage these tactics to transcend the present and future unpredictability. The only remaining question is, are you willing to move forward in times of uncertainty?",

"Bill Wooditch built a multi-million-dollar company from the philosophy: “To receive value, you first have to give value.” For over 25 years, he has created and implemented proven concepts, structures, and narratives that support leadership development. He is a results-based speaker who inspires the quest for innovation, enrichment, and self-fulfillment in personal and professional undertakings. Bill’s second book, “Fail More” (Wall Street Journal bestseller, published by McGraw Hill), was released on March 26, 2019. Fail More provides the insights and tools to take active, strategic measures to turn the sting of failure into the reward of growth. It reveals the setbacks that are both inevitable and valuable and delivers practical ways of quickly moving past self-judgment and -recrimination. By embracing failure, not just “getting past it,” you will fly past your competition, whether you’re building a startup, advancing in your career, or improving your personal life. His bestselling book, “Always Forward!”, has been called “a game plan for life” by NBC’s Tracy Forner. His book is a product of the hard-won experience he earned as the top salesperson at a Fortune 500 company and, later, as the top producer for two consecutive years at the 6th largest insurance brokerage firm in the world. Bill uses his experiences and insight to inspire individuals to pursue personal development and professional success with single-minded fervor, providing valuable guidance in leadership, sales, and becoming a game-changer in your own right.",

"NatWest Group (Formally RBS) is the largest business and commercial bank in the UK. It offers market-leading digital capabilities combined with expert human support for personal customers. And it provides banking services for around one in four businesses in the UK and Ireland. NatWest last presented at DevOps Enterprise Summit 2019, the Hero’s Journey. The journey continues today as Agile and DevOps principles and practices are adopted to improve productivity, creativity and competitive advantage. When NatWest’s Identity and Access Management (IAM) team couldn’t keep pace with demand for application onboarding, automated and self-service capabilities were established. It transformed IAM into a critical enabler for digital innovation at the bank. At DevOps Enterprise Summit, we would like to share our journey, the challenge, pitfalls, successes and opportunities so that others can learn from us and so that we may benefit from wider industry experience in the Identity and Access Management domain.",

How can leadership create the proper environment for people do to their job? In our current context of increasing complexity just working harder is only going to make things worse. "We’ve all heard the buzz around pushing application security into the hands of developers, but if you’re like most companies, it has been hard to actually make this a reality. You aren’t alone - putting the culture, processes, and tooling into place to make this happen is tough. Join StackHawk CSO Scott Gerlach as he shares his triumphs and failures while building DevSecOps practices and tools at companies such as GoDaddy, SendGrid, and Twilio. Dig into specific reasons why developers struggle with AppSec and what you can do to make it work better. Whether you’re a seasoned DevSecOps pro or just starting out, this will be an entertaining (and judgment-free!) talk you won’t want to miss.",

"How do we secure our DevOps processes? Why is shifting left important? How do we get developers to care about security and empower them to make a difference? Where do we start and what do we measure? Often in software development we operate in silos. Different tribes have different priorities and lexicons. How do we break down these preexisting silos and continue innovating and optimising our software development process? Shifting left can help to break down silos and empower developers to take a security first approach. Measuring DevOps can be hard, DORA metrics can help you to become an Elite performer Join this session to find out more about these and importantly, when it comes to securing DevOps where to start and what to measure.",
