I attempted to use ksihota's v6 anchors, and they would have worked if I didn't also install a detachable build surface, but pulling the Wham Bam plate up was too much for the magnets to hold the clip in place. I tried an earlier version that had a built-in anchor for the screw, but the plastic cracked when I tried to install it.

This new variation has a separate two-piece anchor that gets printed lying flat to improve the tensile strength and, because it's already two pieces, doesn't crack when the screw is added and isn't too demanding precision-wise.

Each clip requires the following (so multiply this by three to make all clips):

  • 1x main body (mpmd-magnetic-clip-mod.stl)
    • Printed upright. No supports. Print without a raft for a smoother bottom finish.
  • 2x screw anchor halves (screw-anchor.stl)
    • Printed lying down with the tube opening facing down. No supports should be needed.
      • Printing in this orientation reduces the tendency for the anchor to crack. This is the entire point of the anchor pieces being separate.
  • 1x arm from a 19mm (3/4 in) binder clip
    • Other sizes might work. A smaller arm will need to use the hinge holes closer to the bed.
  • 1x M3 screw, about 10 mm long (about 8 to 12mm should work)
  • 10x 12mm-diameter, 1.5mm-thick Nd disc magnets.
    • The number and thickness are both negotiable. ksihota's version suggests nominally at least 2x to 6x 3mm-thick magnets.
    • While the screw does most of the work fixing the clip in place vertically, the magnets help prevent the clips from rotating out of place accidentally. (It remains fairly simple to rotate the clip intentionally, if necessary.)

Put it together:

A visual synopsis of how the parts are assembled.

  • If the existing bed clips haven't been removed, do so. We'll be installing the clips into the same holes.
  • Install the disc magnets into the cylinders.
  • Install the binder clip arm in the hinge holes that position it best over the corner of the bed. Flip it away from the anchor hole.
    • For an arm from a 19mm (3/4 in) binder clip, use the hinge holes farthest from the bed.
  • Face the two half anchors toward each other to form the anchor. Insert the combined anchor into the anchor hole so that the anchor head settles into the matching recess on the main body.
  • Insert the anchor, through the main body, into the hole on the printer where the original bed clip had been installed.
  • Flip the binder clip arm back over the anchor.
  • Place the screw into the top of the anchor and tighten until the head begins to press down on the clip arm.
  • Continue to adjust the screw on the clip in accordance to your MPMD bed leveling instructions of choice.

Notes:

  • The stock clips can be uninstalled by pulling the rivet pin out of the top, then pulling the clip up by the base. I recommend saving these as a fallback, because my work is fallible.
  • ksihota's version suggests gluing the magnets in place. I haven't found this to be necessary. In any case, you'll want to wait until you're confident that the configuration you have should be permanent.
    • (Read: I've found removing a stack of magnets from a prison of hot glue to be a less-than-pleasant experience.)
  • The screw for this is longer than the screw from ksihota's v6 because that design doesn't have the screw going through the bottom (because it's just for adjustment) and this one does (because it's for both adjustment and attachment).
  • Ideally the hole in the anchor would have been chamfered to make adding the screw easier, but at this precision the difference is probably negligible—and it's already not that difficult.
  • If something goes wrong, feel free to ask about it, but you'll probably find I know hardly more than you do.
    • But definitely don't bug ksihota or anyone else about a problem you've had with my design! The time and patience of volunteers is a scarce and valuable resource that must be conserved.
