Friendly URLs in Rails

Friendly URLs

By default, Rails applications build URLs based on the primary key -- the id column from the database. Imagine we have a Person model and associated controller. We have a person record for Bob Martin that has id number 6. The URL for his show page would be:

/people/6

But, for aesthetic or SEO purposes, we want Bob's name in the URL. The last segment, the 6 here, is called the "slug". Let's look at a few ways to implement better slugs.

class User < ActiveRecord::Base
alias :devise_valid_password? :valid_password?
def valid_password?(password)
begin
devise_valid_password?(password)
rescue BCrypt::Errors::InvalidHash
return false unless Digest::SHA1.hexdigest(password) == encrypted_password
logger.info "User #{email} is using the old password hashing method, updating attribute."
self.password = password

Remote data querying for Twitter Bootstrap 2.0 Typeahead without modifications
<script>
// Charles Lawrence - Feb 16, 2012. Free to use and modify. Please attribute back to @geuis if you find this useful
// Twitter Bootstrap Typeahead doesn't support remote data querying. This is an expected feature in the future. In the meantime, others have submitted patches to the core bootstrap component that allow it.
// The following will allow remote autocompletes *without* modifying any officially released core code.
// If others find ways to improve this, please share.
var autocomplete = $('#searchinput').typeahead()
.on('keyup', function(ev){
ev.stopPropagation();

Bootstrap's Typeahead plugin extended (allowing for AJAX functionality) among other things

This is a fork of Bootstrap Typeahead that adds minimal but powerful extensions.

For example, process typeahead list asynchronously and return objects

  # This example does an AJAX lookup and is in CoffeeScript
  $('.typeahead').typeahead(
    # source can be a function
    source: (typeahead, query) ->
 # this function receives the typeahead object and the query string

Ubuntu 12.04 Ruby, Rails, Nginx, Unicorn

Ubuntu 12.04, Ruby, Rails, Nginx, Unicorn and git-deploy

In the seemlingly endless search for the actual correct and easy way to deploy a Rails app, we have tried several ways. We tried out using Apache2 and running a cluster of Thin servers. With the built in threading of Puma we decided to use it with Nginx.

Server Setup

  • Create new server
  • Login to new server
    • ssh root@IPaddress (you can also use the domain name if you have the DNS setup already)
    • accept the RSA key

A rails model for gollum-lib, which is used to embed `gollum` into existing rails project. The `unindexable` and `unreadable` statuses are introduced. The `pull` and `push` method is added to have the git repository sync with its **remote origin**.

@@unreadable = 'pending'
