IPv4 and IPv6 Address RegExp

This will fail to match 1.1.1.1

IPV4 = /^(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|1?[0-9]{1,2})(.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|1?[0-9]{1,2})){3}$/,

The above IPv6 address regex does not account for shorthand address forms. For example:

• 2134:: 1234:4567:2468:1236:2444:2106
• 1080:0:0:0:8:800:200C
• 0:0:0:0:0:0:A00:1
• 1080::8:800:200C:417A
• ::A00:1
• ::1

Here is my attempt:

IPV6 = /^([0-9a-f]|:){1,4}(:([0-9a-f]{0,4})*){1,7}$/i

Both attempts at ipv6 fail for address "1::"

@simon-p-r: which is correct, because 1:: is not a valid IPv6.
localhost is ::1 . Not 1:: .

fails, because it recognizes any string consisting only of up to 11 colons.

Also it recognizes more than 2 colons following each other.

Furthermore it recognizes more than one occurrence of :: which does not meet IPv6 specifications.

Was a problem, takes empty characters before the ip. I has just 1 ip. Solution - replace all \s with \h.

just improved to validate masks ( maximum /32 for ipv4 and maximum /128 for ipv6)... masks are optional.
