Attn: Henry Bellingham MP
North West Norfolk
Sunday 29 January 2017
Dear Henry Bellingham,
I write to you today in a state of fear and uncertainty for my, and my friends, colleagues and neighbours, future.
As an LGBT woman, I am lucky in the UK and EU to receive protection by the State against persecution. I am worried that our Government, in very publicly failing to condemn the actions of the new President of the United States, Donald Trump, in banning entry to their country based upon religion or place of birth, that actually this is something that our Government actually quietly supports. First they came for the Muslims...
How have we ended up in a situation where our Prime Minister feels unwilling our unable to speak out strongly against actions by a US President that are clearly based on racism and against their constitution? Especially when other members of the EU, given that they have strength in numbers, are able to speak out?
Should we look forward to our Prime Minister feeling that she cannot speak out against other, possibly even more shocking, actions in the future? Does this show that, in reality, Britain is now weaker, not stringer?
Every single person I have spoken with this weekend has expressed dismay at what is happening in the US. We are all, without exception, appalled that he may be visiting the UK this Summer. He is most certainly not welcome by me and I will attend any demonstration against his visit. I fully expect it to be the largest demonstration to ever happen in the UK.
Yours sincerely,
Rachel
