Study group

Study group

The goal of the study group is to learn together cool/advanced/edge stuff that we are not used to see in the PHP world, such as:

  • Turing machines
  • Data mining
  • Esoteric languages
  • Database internals
  • Data structures
  • Algorithms
  • Pattern matching
  • Cryptography
  • Steganography
  • Compilers
  • ...

The idea is to choose 1 topic each month (4 weeks), curate some initial material (videos, blog posts, papers, books...) and try to have one goal for the end of the month. For example, if we choose esoteric languages, we would learn the first two weeks about the topic watching videos and reading posts/papers/books, discussing the materials in a forum, and then try to implement one esoteric language (e.g. brainfuck) in PHP in the other two weeks.

I think the group should be small, at least at first, so we can coordinate better. And at least 3-4 hours per week should be required, so only apply if you have time. We all procastinate, and even more if it is something optional like this, so only people ready to be active should be here. Having small goals during the month may help too.

Are you in? What do you think?

I have limited time but I'm interested. Will there be any way for people like me to passively learn from material that's curated through this group?

I am interested Raul. You guys are very advanced compared to me, but I would try to keep the pace if you accept me.

@raulfraile what about the required level? Because you or a guy like @igorw have a better knowledge than me in most of the topic related with programming...In case that there is no required level I'm in at least to investigate, read, etc. If not, I would like to have the related material

@biruwon, i think knowledge of php is not the key skill if the topic of 4 weeks is something like 'malware detection' or other unusual one

I commute everyday to work ... looks like a nice idea to invest some time.

I'm interested, but I don't know if I've got enough level to follow some of the topics. By the way I'd love to have a look at this.

If the first topic isn't too exotic I think I could be in. ;-)

I like the idea, even if i won't have that much time you're going to set the level nor is my level at all that much high enough, to discuss with you all :)

But i hope you're going to publish your monthly work and make it available for us all (to get a better skill)
👍
