I’m Trisha Hershberger. IFA 2014, the big</text><text start="6.55" dur="3.82">tech conference in Berlin is going on right
now, which means that new gadgets are being</text><text start="10.37" dur="4.12">announced, rumors are being confirmed, and
we get one step closer to the Matrix. Many</text><text start="14.49" dur="4.03">new devices have been and are yet to be announced
as of the recording of this video, the Sony</text><text start="18.52" dur="5.25">Xperia Z3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to
name a few, but we need to hold up and wait</text><text start="23.77" dur="4.98">a minute to talk about something altogether
different and exciting. Gear VR – Samsung’s</text><text start="28.75" dur="5.16">own VR headset (God another one?) that is
powered by a cell phone (fake puke) and is</text><text start="33.91" dur="4.679">being rushed to market this year. Hmmm…
So while I just gave you my gut responses</text><text start="38.589" dur="3.93">to this news, upon further inspection, it
actually looks kinda cool and here’s why.</text><text start="42.519" dur="3.88">It’s not just Samsung trying to jump on
the VR bandwagon. Samsung is pairing with</text><text start="46.399" dur="5.1">Oculus, so if this does indeed come to market
this year, Gear VR will be Oculus’ first</text><text start="51.499" dur="3.84">consumer product on the market. Samsung is
providing the hardware while leaving the software</text><text start="55.339" dur="3">up to Oculus.
You simply slip the newly announced Galaxy</text><text start="58.339" dur="5.101">Note 4, with it’s new Quad HD display, into
the front of the headset, adjust the straps</text><text start="63.44" dur="5.039">and immerse yourself in the VR. That means
all the tech powering the device comes from</text><text start="68.479" dur="5.78">the phone, not the headset, which is a fundamental
difference from other VR headsets like Morpheus</text><text start="74.259" dur="5.411">and Rift, that offers it’s own set of benefits
and drawbacks. Benefits? Mobility! No wires</text><text start="79.67" dur="5.259">to get caught up in! It’s simpler to produce
hence being the first to market and while</text><text start="84.929" dur="3.531">no price point has been announced, we can
only hope it will be more affordable. One</text><text start="88.46" dur="4.36">of the coolest features is the pass through
video mode. Using the Note 4’s rear facing</text><text start="92.82" dur="4.5">camera, the Gear VR offers the option to see
a live video feed of what is actually (real</text><text start="97.32" dur="3.2">life) in front of you at the moment without
fully taking you out of the game or video</text><text start="100.52" dur="4.129">you are immersed in. Like if you are mid game
and need to reach for a drink. Gaming gaming</text><text start="104.649" dur="7">gaming, press a button, grab your drink, back
to gaming. The headset itself is very lightweight,</text><text start="115.649" dur="4.14">with adjustable straps and padding around
the eyes for comfort. It has a dial to adjust</text><text start="119.789" dur="4.58">the focus for near and farsighted folks, so
lenses don’t need to be swapped out.</text><text start="124.369" dur="4.92">The drawbacks? Your experience is powered
by a phone, not a PS4 or PC, and it’s simply</text><text start="129.289" dur="3.67">not capable of outputting the breathtaking
graphics we’ve seen in other models. That</text><text start="132.959" dur="3.831">being said, hands on reports have said that
the image looks crisp, doesn’t show screen</text><text start="136.79" dur="5">tearing and outputs a 60Hz refresh rate. The
96 degree field of view is surprisingly only</text><text start="141.79" dur="4.08">4 degrees short of Oculus’ latest dev kit.
Another big drawback is that the accelerometer</text><text start="145.87" dur="5.75">and gyrometer only track head movement as
you look around, not if you move forward or</text><text start="151.62" dur="4.67">backward. Oh yeah, and sound. The Note 4 does
not have stereo speakers so you are hearing</text><text start="156.29" dur="4.839">“3d special sound” but again, hands on
reports have been pleasantly surprised with</text><text start="161.129" dur="2.681">the results.
Now it’s easy when we are comparing prototypes</text><text start="163.81" dur="5">with no price point to want the most impressive
and highest performing device, but when it</text><text start="168.81" dur="4.98">comes to actually buying a device, the Gear
VR may offer a really solid balance of performance</text><text start="173.79" dur="6.119">at a low cost. So what price point would make
Gear VR worth it for you? Keep in mind you’d</text><text start="179.909" dur="7">need the Note 4 as well. Hmmm… We’ll have
to wait and see! Like, subscribe…</text><text start="187.439" dur="7">I’m Trisha Hershberger and I’m considering
the Note 4 anyway, so maybe?</text><text start="200.849" dur="1.09">[MUSIC]</text></transcript>
