Back to your resume and cover letter you’ve been working on:

What other next steps do you want to take to make these two components stronger?

  • I want to build a more generic form of a cover letter after I have completed the one for Handshake. I want to reoder my existing resume based on feedback recieved and tidy up the skills for it.

Outreach Brainstorming:

Either explore the company you wrote a cover letter for or find a new company to explore this week; Go to their company LinkedIn page and start to explore the employees. Who are a couple people you could reach out to? Why?

  • I could and have started to reach out to one of the employees at handshake who I have a real life connection with as he is on the front end team. Based on conversations had previously with him I was going to reach out to some of the Turing alumni that work for Handshake and see if I can get another perspective of the company as well as more ways I could be prepared if I persued that company as my career.

Finalize Your Plan:

Who have you decided to reach out to? Why that person? How will you contact them? What do you want to talk to them about? How will you follow up?

  • I have decided to reach out to Lovisa, a turing Alum who works at handshake. I want to ask them what the whole process is like to try for a company like Handshake and get some ideas on how I would want to prepare myself for not only the entry process but to also be successful in the workplace if that were to happen. I also want to ask questions about the day to day work life and culture.

Execute your plan:

Reach out to your contact THIS WEEK. If possible, reach out to more than one person OR find a meetup to attend also. What happened? What did you learn about the company? What other next steps should you take for pursuing this company? Be sure to update this in Huntr.

  • I made contact with the individual at Handshake and we talked about the resume and cover letter that got her into the position she has and what she really enjoyed about it. I plan to continue to talk with her about the process further.

I want to challenge you to look at developers who work at Handshake and then also apply to companies that they have previously worked at because you know that handshake will hire out of those places. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
