OpenBSD on the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2016

This is the 4th Generation X1 Carbon based on the Intel Skylake chipset. You need OpenBSD 6.0-beta (-current) or later.

  • Overall, it is a very nice, light, and fast laptop. I really like it.
  • Wireless iwm(4) 8260 is supported with the latest driver changes by stsp@. The connection is sometimes not stable or the firmware shows errors when switching the AP configuration. But stsp@ is actively working on improving it!
  • My laptop has a NVMe disk which is supported by dlg@'s new nvme(4) driver and works just fine (I'm using it with softraid crypto which partially undoes the performance benefits but it is still amazingly fast).
  • Booting from UEFI is supported and recommended to get efifb(4) (see below).
  • vmm(4) works if enabled in the kernel.
  • USB3 via xhci(4) works.
  • I didn't test video(4) and I'm not aware of any other issues.

Problems:

  • There is a bug with the timers in relation to power management: if the laptop boots up in low performance mode (the AC is not plugged in), the kernel runs into a timeout when polling the CPU information on startup which prevents it from fetching all the CPU information that is required by vmm(4) to attach. Bumping the timeout helps but a real solution hasn't been found yet (is delay(9) not working correctly?).
  • It has a Micro SD slot on the back but the integrated Realtek RTS525A card reader is NOT supported yet (rtsx(4) fails to initialize it).
  • inteldrm(4) is NOT supported so you have to use either vesa(4) or wsfb(4). I highly recommend wsfb(4) over vesa(4) as it doesn't need direct hardware access (machdep.allowaperture is not needed). The same situation happened with every previous generation of inteldrm(4) so I expect it to be supported any time soon. wsfb(4) works fine and fast for me (see below).
  • Due to missing inteldrm(4) support, suspend and hibernate is not working either. The good side is that it boots very fast.

Configuration:

I'm using X in full resolution of 2560x1440 with wsfb (backed by efifb(4)). I configured my X session for HiDPI (retina), so I had to calculate and set DisplaySize in xorg.conf to get the correct DPI. With my configuration below, most but not all fonts display correctly. A few widgets still have tiny fonts.

  • I'm using Window Maker (since about 1997). It doesn't fully support HiDPI but it is possible to make it useable by tweaking the fonts. Some widgets are still tiny but window titles, menus etc. work fine.

Can you boot it with CSM disabled in the EFI settings? The Skylake X260 only seems to boot correctly with it turned on (but in EFI mode). When turned off it hangs on a black screen when the kernel starts to init (right after boot loader).

A quick update: -current and hopefully 6.2 now supports Skylake in inteldrm. Suspend and hibernate works as well, nvme(4) has been fixed to support it, so I can rm my wsfb xorg.conf and it just works with the defaults.

@reyk I am using a Thinkpad T460 and I have problems with the brightness-keys. They are not recognized by xev and don't do anything when I try to increase or lower the screen brightness. Do you have that problem also? How did you solve it?
