Introducing Help Forum

A couple of us mentors created Help Forum, which is Stack Overflow, but for the student and mentor community. If interested sign up at the site here https://help-forum.wearementors.io and email at me (richardrpanzer@gmail.com) so I can approve you.

##Introductory Message

Hi fellow students and mentors,

My name is Ricky. I am a Rails and iOS mentor here at Bloc. As a mentor, I've been guiding my students to several different channels for help. For my students, two strategies have been the most helpful: Google && Stack Overflow and Curriculum specific slack groups. The Bloc Hacker Group on Facebook, Bloc Overflow, and Basecamp have also proven helpful.

Google and Stack Overflow

Googling and Stack Overlowing is great. It's actually a skill a lot of us mentors try instilling in our students throughout the course. We use it everyday while coding to solve our issues. The problem is that posting on Stack Overflow can be quite intimidating as the whole internet community is on it, especially as someone new to coding. In addition, it can be hard to find problems specific to the Bloc Curriculum.

On the other hand, Slack is great for get a quick response, but many questions can be repeated and get lost in the Slack Chat. This is why a couple of us mentors have built Help Forum.

Help Forum

It's basically Stack Overflow, but for the student and mentor community. Since it's our community, you might feel more comfortable posting, answering, and searching in Help Forum. You can also search questions by roadmap and checkpoint.

If interested, sign up at the site here https://help-forum.wearementors.io, and email me at richardrpanzer@gmail.com so I can approve you.

Cheers! -Ricky

Common Questions

How should I use this site?

  • Check to see if your question has been asked on the Help Forum.
  • If it's not asked on Help Forum, create the question
  • Want your question answered more quickly? Share it to your existing forms of help --> Slack Channel, BaseCamp, Facebook Group, Mentor, etc. This will be extremely helpful in the early days of the site.
  • Upvote questions and answers you like, comment on anything you want clarification on or if you have anything to add
  • When you get an answer that solves your question, click the checkmark to let others know which solution worked for you.

But I want my student to have an authentic Stack Overflow experience

  • And we do too! What we notice though is that Stack Overflow can be intimidating to post on, and searching throughout it may not answer the bloc specific questions the student may have. This is already happenning as students are using other channels for those questions: Slack, FB, etc. Think of this as a playground for posting purposes, and replacement that's easily searchable for the Bloc specific questions.
