Retrieving Docker Image Sizes

Retrieving Docker Image Sizes

There are two metrics that are important to consider when discussing the size of Docker images.

  1. Compressed size - This is often referred to as the wire size. This affects how fast/slow images can be pulled from a registry. This impacts the first run experience on machines where images are not cached.
  2. Uncompressed size - This is often referred to as the size on disk. This affects how much local storage is required to support your Docker workloads.

The example commands shown below will work on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

How to Measure the Compressed Size

# ---- Base Node ----
FROM node:carbon AS base
# Create app directory
WORKDIR /app
# ---- Dependencies ----
FROM base AS dependencies
# A wildcard is used to ensure both package.json AND package-lock.json are copied
COPY package*.json ./
# install app dependencies including 'devDependencies'

One of the tedious thing in Stack Overflow is to grab example data provided by users in order to be able to use it to reproduce the case and try to solve it. Here is how to do it efficiently in R and Python, hope this will help you being the first to answer!
import pandas as pd
import io
# Paste the text by using of triple-quotes to span String literals on multiple lines
zz = """Sepal.Length Sepal.Width Petal.Length Petal.Width Species
1 5.1 3.5 1.4 0.2 setosa
2 4.9 3.0 1.4 0.2 setosa
3 4.7 3.2 1.3 0.2 setosa

AWS EBS - Find unused snapshots

This script can help you find and remove unused AWS snapshots and volumes.

There is hardcoded list of regions that it searches, adjust the value to suit your needs.

Use snapshot.py snapshot-report to generate report.csv containing information about all snapshots.

snapshot.py snapshot-cleanup lets you interactively delete snapshot if it finds it is referencing unexisting resources.

How to modularize your py.test fixtures

Using py.test is great and the support for test fixtures is pretty awesome. However, in order to share your fixtures across your entire module, py.test suggests you define all your fixtures within one single conftest.py file. This is impractical if you have a large quantity of fixtures -- for better organization and readibility, you would much rather define your fixtures across multiple, well-named files. But how do you do that? ...No one on the internet seemed to know.

Turns out, however, you can define fixtures in individual files like this:

tests/fixtures/add.py

import pytest

@pytest.fixture
