Task D- Set up your Environment:

  • Did you run into any issues?
    No
  • How do you open Atom from your Terminal?
    atom .
  • What is the file extension for a Ruby file?
    .rb
  • What is the Atom shortcut for hiding/ showing your file tree view?
    cmd-\
  • What is the Atom shortcut for quickly finding a file (fuzzy finder)?
    cmd-t

Task E- The Command Line:

  • screenshots of your terminal after each exercise will be posted in comments

Day One Questions:

  • What does pwd stand for, and how is this command helpful?
    print working directory
It's helpful because it tells you in which directory you are, it's helpful if you get lost navigating among directories.
  • What does hostname tell you, and what shows up in YOUR terminal when you type hostname?
    my computer's network name
    My hostname is Robertas-MBP

Task F- Learn Ruby:

Day 2 - I worked on the following sections: Variables, Datatypes, Strings, Input and Output

Option 1 Questions:

IRB

  • How do you start and stop irb?
To start: type irb in the terminal
To stop: type exit in the terminal
  • What might you use irb for? To experiment and find out how certain language features work.

Variables

  • How do you create a variable?
Type the name of the variable.
  • What did you learn about the rules for naming variables?
When naming a variable you can't:
    -Use only numbers
    -Start with a number
    -Use a dash
  • How do you change the value of a variable?
Assign a new value to an existing variable using the a single equals sign (=).

Datatypes

  • How can you find out the class of a variable?
Call the class method on the variable -> Type .class after the variable.
  • What are two string methods?
    -count -encode
  • How can you change an integer to a string?
    Use the conversion method: to_s

Strings

  • Why might you use double quotes instead of single quotes in Ruby?
Because you can't use string interpolation with single quotes.
  • What is this used for in Ruby: #{}?
To embed a Ruby statement into another string.
  • How would you remove all the vowels from a string?
Using the method delete -> Type .delete('aeiou') after the string.

Input & Output

  • What do 'print' and 'puts' do in Ruby?
'print' prints information to the user of the program but doesn't make a new line after printing.
'puts' prints information to the user of the program and makes a new line after printing.
  • What does 'gets' do in Ruby?
'gets' pauses the program and waits for the user to type something and hit enter. It then returns the value back to the program and continues the execution.
  • Add a screenshot in the comments of the program you created that uses 'puts' and 'gets', and give it the title, "I/O".

Day 3 - I worked on the following sections: Numberss & Arithmetic, Booleans, Conditionals

Numbers & Arithmetic

  • What is the difference between integers and floats?
Integers are whole numbers and floats are decimal numbers.
  • Complete the challenge, and post a screenshot of your program in the comments with the title, "Numbers".

Booleans

  • What do each of the following symbols mean?
    • ==
      equal
    • =
      greater than or equal

    • <=
      less than or equal
    • !=
      different
    • &&
      and
    • ||
      or
  • What are two Ruby methods that return booleans?
    .end with?
    .empty?

Conditionals

  • What is flow control?
When the program makes decisions as of what part of the program to execute based on a conditional statement.
  • What will the following code return?
    'Not many apples'
apple_count = 4

if apple_count > 5
  puts "Lots of apples!"
else
  puts 'Not many apples...'
end
  • What is an infinite loop, and how can you get out of one?
It is a loop that goes on forever. This happens if the loop body doesn't do anything to make the while condition false, so the loop doesn't end.
  • Take a screenshot of your program and terminal showing two different outputs, and post it in the comments with the title, "Conditionals".

Day 4 - I worked on the following sections: nil, Symbols

nil

  • What is nil?
Nil means 'nothing'. It is used to show a variable that hasn't been assigned a value yet or when a function that dind't return a value.
  • Take a screenshot of your terminal after working through Step 4, and post it in the comments with the title, "nil".

Symbols

  • How can symbols be beneficial in Ruby?
Symbols help Ruby use memory more efficiently. They allow Ruby variables to point to the same object in several places instead of allocating a new copy.
  • Does naming symbols use the same rules for naming variables?
No. Symbols start with a colon followed by charaters or a string (in single or double quotation marks).
  • Take a screenshot of your terminal after working through Step 4, and post it in the comments with the title, "Symbols".

Day 5 - I worked on the following sections: Arrays, Hashes

Arrays

  • What method can you call to find out how many elements are in an array?
    .lenght
  • What is the index of pizza in this array: ["pizza", "ice cream", "cauliflower"]?
    0
  • What do 'push' and 'pop' do?
push -> adds a new element to the end of the array pop -> remove the element at the end of the array

Hashes

  • Describe some differences between arrays and hashes.
Arrays store an ordered list of elements. Hashes store pairs of items, associating keys and values. With arrays, we access elements by their index. With hashes, we access elements by their key.
  • What is a case when you might prefer an array? What is a case when you might prefer a hash?
Arrays are useful when we want to store a list of elements without any additional data for each element. Hashes are useful to group large amounts of related data. They allow us to store properties of some object.
    • Take a screenshot of your terminal after working through Step 2, and post it in the comments with the title, "Hashes".

Task G- Prework Reflection:

  • Were you able to get through the work? Did you rush to finish, or take your time?
  • What are you most looking forward to learning more about?
  • What topics would you most like to see reinforced by instructors?
  • What is most confusing to you about what you've learned?
  • What questions do you have for your student mentor or for your instructors?

Pre-work Tasks- One Month Schedule

(Note: You will most likely only get to the following sections if you have more than a week for your pre-work. If you are doing the one week pre-work schedule, you may delete this section of the Gist.)

Railsbridge Curriculum, cont.

  • Loops: Take a screenshot of your "Challenge" program, and post it as a comment in your Gist.
  • What challenges did you try for "Summary: Basics"? Post a screenshot of one of your programs.
  • Functions: How do you call a function and store the result in a variable?
You call a function by typing its name followed by the value you want to send to the function inside quotation marks. To store the result in a variable you need to declare the variable before calling the function.
  • Describe the purpose of the following in Ruby classes: initialize method, new method, instance variables.
initialize method - saves the initial data your object is created with and performs any other required set-up.
new method - it's used to pass arguments to the initialize method.
instance variables - they belong to an object, which means that they can't be changed or accessed outside that object. An instance variable's name starts with @.
  • How to Write a Program: Screenhero with your student mentor and share your program. Write a bit about what you found most challenging, and most enjoyable, in creating your program.
