Informational Interview 12_4
Individual: David Zylich
Connection:
-Connected through a team member at RBC. Priya
-Priya connected with a mentor of hers who knew a senior developer in the mobile applications department.
Rationale:
-I decided to complete my first informational interview with him because our mutual connection(s) conveyed that he was very keen on taking on a mentorship role.
Informational Interview:
We started the interview by talking about our backgrounds.
The similarities of our educational backgrounds because we both came from a non-financial, non-technical backgrounds.
He came from a Philosophy major and I came from Kinesiology both ending up at Royal Bank of Canada in our current roles.
He developed through a technical career predominantly through self learning and creating real life projects.
His first project was (while working in the technical department of a security company) developing an application to identify where and when security guards checked various check points.
He emphasized that through his hiring process he values real world projects.
As we progressed through our conversation he was very keen on mentorship, showing me the various stages of development he is involved in within his team.
We aimed to schedule more times in the near future to have me sit in on some of the meetings that he attends as a developer to see the various stages of development.
As we continue to develop our relationship, I will look to ask him to review my portfolio and tailor it towards a portfolio that highlights technical skills and projects that would be desirable for teams (such as his) looking to hire a new team member.
