Growing Startup Seeking A Well-Rounded Software Engineer

We are a new DC-area startup with Angel funding. Launched our prototype in April of this year; since then we've seen steady growth and happy, paying customers. (And we're already making waves among established players in the residential real estate industry.)

It's time to grow. We're looking to add a really good, well-rounded engineer to work alongside our CTO. (Rockstars, Code Ninjas, Ninjaneers, Ninjanerds, Silverbacks, and Brogrammers need not apply.) You'll be coding, of course, but you'll also need to think through design, architecture, and product-market fit, and take complete ownership of several key components of our system. In other words, be ready to wear many hats and change them on short notice.

More about us:

  • Co-founders have history of successful tech startups. (10+ years of startup experience each.)
  • Board of directors have deep knowledge of industry and lots of connections. (And a bunch of Ivy league degrees, FWIW.)
  • Heavily influenced by Hacker News culture and The Lean Startup.

More about you:

  • Mid- to high-level software engineer with startup experience or an unhealthy addiction to side projects.
  • Fast learner. Like, really really really fast.
  • Desire to work on an actual business problem, not "sharing cat pictures."
  • Desire to learn about the residential real estate industry.
  • Primarily detail-oriented, but can zoom out to see the big picture.
  • Familiar with (but skeptical of) hot new technologies and development fads.
  • Polyglot.

Desired skills and other stuff we're looking for:

  • Required: Ruby on Rails, SQL, HTML/Javascript/JQuery, Git.
  • Backbone, Coffeescript, Bootstrap, DelayedJob, EventMachine, the Pomodoro technique
  • Unit testing with mock objects. (We're not strictly TDD, but we do test a lot.)
  • Heroku, Amazon, Mixpanel, NewRelic, Twilio.
  • Appreciation of good beer and italian subs.

Some fun tech challenges we face:

  • Machine learning / Bayesian classifiers
  • Multi-dimensional data analysis / Business Intelligence
  • Gmail IMAP integration via OAuth

Lofty manifesto:

We believe that a niche product is a great place to start when you are trying to disrupt an industry. We believe that the more you zoom in on a problem, the more interesting it gets. We believe that there is honor in bringing technology to the masses. We believe that the fastest route to success is to create value for customers. We believe in learning on the fly. We may screw it up the first time, but we'll get it right the second time. We believe that-- in most cases-- getting "TechCrunched" is a distraction. We don't do startups for the fame, we do startups because we can't stomach bureaucracy. If you believe this stuff too, get in touch.

Compensation:

  • Market salary.
  • Equity options.
  • Health insurance.
