Bash script for checking a semantic version

This bash script validates a version on compliance to Semantic Versioning 2.0.0.

The regex I used is a slightly modified version of the suggested regex according to:
Is there a suggested regular expression (RegEx) to check a SemVer string?

I've simply replaced the \d by [0-9] and removed the non-capturing groups (?:), to let the regex work in a bash script.

This runs very well in a shell script (at least in GNU bash >= 3.2). But please do not provide too much information about your issue.

I didn't said "bash", in plain shell, it doesn't works.

Well, bash is also a shell. If you mean the bourne-shell ('sh'), that won't work, because AFAIK there is no regex implemented. This script is designed for bash and will probably not work in other shells (in sh, zsh and fish definitely not).
