I found in android:

private static final String[] SMS_ONLY_COLUMNS =

139 { "address", "body", "person", "reply_path_present",
140 "service_center", "status", "subject", "type", "error_code" };
Which is located:
/packages/providers/TelephonyProvider/src/com/android/providers/telephony/MmsSmsProvider.java
and its available under android:

// These are the columns that appear only in the SMS message
// table.
private static final String[] SMS_ONLY_COLUMNS =
        { "address", "body", "person", "reply_path_present",
          "service_center", "status", "subject", "type", "error_code" };

and for sms:

So this parameter whic is indicating that message was read is provided by mms provider.
I checked and mmsSmsProvider java existr on androd since version 2.1, so it could be usefull.
