Instead of every person in the extended family buying a present for every person
in the extended family, which is like, totally crap, this year we played The
Present Game.
The game works by each participant buying some random gift, to the tune of a
budget (ours was $20 AUD), and they are wrapped and all put in a pile.
Every participants name is put in a bowl and someone draws and names the person
drawn. That person goes and picks a present, unwraps it in front of everyone
and shows them what it is.
The second person does the same, except they can then choose to forcibly swap
the present of the first person, if they deem it better. Another name is drawn,
and the third person then can forcibly swap for any of the three gifts available.
By forcibly, I mean, the other party doesn't get a choice, they have to swap.
So the last person gets their pick of the presents, and those left waiting to
be drawn by no means make it unclear about how they're going to trade their
present for something they want that has already been unwrapped.
It's really quite amusing! And because the budget is low it's not that big a
deal, and it makes for some good old Aussie jiving between family members. It
was by far the best part of the night and it brought everyone together.
I therefore implore you to play the present game. IMPLORE!
