About the location: Balaji Nagar (in the Telco Nagar Area, Pune, Maharashtra) is a small area housing around 500 families or 270 households, each having 4-5 members. The people here mostly belong to Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. They are primarily engaged in daily wage labour to make a living.
There is a primary and a secondary school each; as well as a primary health centre. The area also has access to clean drinking water.
Initiation of the programme: Magic Bus initiated its sport for development session in this community started on with the youth mentor (YM) Smita Shinde in December 2011. Smita identified and trained two more volunteer youth leaders, Akasha Mane and Sachin, and reached out to 50 children in the area.
The local community has been very supportive of the sessions, and the programme as a whole. They fully cooperate in getting equipment, land and resources for conducting sessions, games and tournaments and community meetings.
A typical weekly Magic Bus session at Balaji Nagar goes on for 2 hours and is divided into 3 parts:
• Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
• Main Activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
• Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
Magic Bus organizes different activities like street plays and skits, parents meetings, and tree-plantation drives to promote awareness on health, education and environment, as well as conductsregular home visits.
Over a period of time, their work with a large group of children has raised confidence levels among the community youth leaders, at the same time building their stature within the community. Their work is respected by the community elders and children. Many children want to become volunteers like them when they grow up.
Areas of behaviour change addressed: The Magic Bus programme in Balaji Nagar is working on delivering key messages like:
? Boys and girls should participate equally in sport;
? It is important to attend school regularly;
? One should keep the community clean; and
? Reading, writing and playing are all equally important.
With your support,Magic Bus is able to:
1. Hold 40 sessions (each lasting for 2 hours) in a year,
2. Provide a full set of playing equipment including footballs, handballs, cones and markers,
3. Train the community youth volunteers (CYLs) in the Sport for Development curriculum, and
4. Develop a youth mentor (YM) to monitor the village programme over the entire year.
