Review

  • Zone not effective when we were down.
  • Under-used cobra
    • learn how to call it as much as we can, without planning
  • Contain zone does not push the disc back.
    • First layer scared to poke the lanes.
    • Need stronger players in first layer
    • Deep deep does not need to be very strong. Just need to communicate well
    • Don't dive too much
  • Man D is not applying enough pressure.
    • bad pulls
    • do not run down as hard
    • energy level
    • confidence
    • desire
    • don't understand vision and awareness
    • someone to lead by example on the line
    • aggressiveness on the mark
    • players not receptive to voices
  • girls need confidence boost
    • hard to find open spaces
    • too many objectives to achieve
  • not used to losing games and not seeing immediate results when we try to make a come back
  • roles are not defined
  • are we mature enough to play both O and D on command

Summary

Challenge players to force themselves to endure hardship.

Cannot have false positive environment, but also cannot be negative.

Are we still doing the things we are suppose to do even when we are tired or down.

Objectives

  1. Create hardship and toughness
  2. Achieve common understanding and reps
  3. Test common understanding with tough scrimmages
  4. 20 every practice

TODO

By 27th April

  • Write up on Contain Zone (Shan)
  • Come up with starters (Andy + Shan)

By 1st May

  • Prepare Groot (Ben)
  • Draft zone lines (line captains)
  • Draft stacked lines (line captains)

Always

  • remind about man D every training (coaches)
  • remind about objective of practice and timeline (coaches)
  • poll about extra throw/gym after each training
  • poll buddy activity

KIV

  • Gender-based lines (single gender handling/cutting)
  • Try it out with stacked lines first

Andy's Takeaway from Grizzly

  1. Increase mobility not immediately involved in a play, especially right after throwing (change of habit)
  2. Improve moving the disc from side to side, learn to do it at will (Big 5 point box)
  3. Increase number of hybrid players so that offence can run smoothly (Big 5 point box)
  4. Develop good habits to improve throwing reset throws (Key reset steps, 1 full day)
  5. Improve consistency, release point and switching sides (3 man drill in wind)

Big 5 point box

  • Distance similar to 1-6 stack
  • Start with 4 players
  • Eventually increase to 7 players

Key reset steps

  • Keeping defender behind us
  • Stepping out
  • Leading the throw
  • Throwing the throw

Horizontal

  1. Shallow stack
  2. Create space by slashing
  3. Isolated cuts
  4. if poached - be aware of changes in space, still perform the cuts to create space; moment disc is passed to a cutter, there wont be poaches

Variants

Blue

  • handler weave
  • Stack shifts back to give space
  • Once handler moves close enough, cutters provide option

1-6

  1. Shift up/down or left right - sprint to sidelines - Don't shift diagonally
  2. Cut from last in stack
  3. Shoulder cut and drive cuts
  4. Aggressive handler movement
  5. On open side, clear into stack for inside pass NO TWO HANDS
  6. On break side, cut deep to clear for 2 hands option
  7. Handlers dont be afraid to lose yards
  8. Change angle of attack by swinging disc

Starters

  • kick start offense flow
  • each line to come up with 2 starters
  • share with each other and execute

Man-D

  • Marking handlers, be aware - check back to look for cuts
  • Don't commit hips too early
  • Stay low
  • Mental aspect - stay focused

Contain zone

  • Force middle
  • No gambling to make bids
  • As many passes as possible
  • Intent is to contain.
  • Middle handler mark is the AG (annoying guy), most aggressive mark on the line.
  • Reset handlers mark to do a slight dive.
  • When disc is at the side line, swing is ok, NO up the line or forward inside throw to the near reset handler.
  • Far end handler mark can afford to dive higher - Sweep
  • Active short deep pushes forward more.
  • Wings to stay back slightly.

Cobra

  • TCO - TRAP, CHAOS, OPPORTUNITIES

Trap

  • Force sidelines by diving
  • Disc is in middle, 2 options:
    1. Full dive into the lane, give the swing & challenge the downfield shots as much as possible
    2. slight dive into the lanes + downfield defenders guard narrow with front-back config
  • Disc at sidelines: Trap, no easy resets.
  • Defender on reset handler on the far end (when disc is at sidelines), SWEEP
  • SWEEP can eat into the middle lane to cover the insides

Create Chaos

  • Transition between zone and man

Opportunities

  • Downfield defence

  • I am Groot: Linger in the open space and briefly stop any up the line or open side throws

  • Scenarios to remember

    • Groot after you are successful in denying a hard in-cut to the sideline
    • Groot after you are successful in denying a strike cut along the sideline
    • Don’t Groot if you are suppose to be marking the thrower on the sideline. If not, we are not trapping.
    • Don’t Groot if there is no Trap (don’t Groot in the middle of the field)
    • Don’t Groot if there is already a Groot
    • Don’t Groot if there isn’t someone of the same gender to cover last back for you
  • Last back : ALWAYS cover the deep - gender specific

Trap zone

  • Pinch point is sidelines, be selective when pinch is used to note tire out the rabbit wall
  • Try funnelling to weaker handler to apply pinch (use with discretion)
  • No gambling outside pinch point
  • Aggressive rabbit/wall
  • Rabbit wall cannot be too reactive
  • Wall, find a receiver to take off if no one is in ur space.
  • Wall constantly check around for the crash
  • Line 2 experimented with 3 man cup instead of rabbit wall - short deep will plug the holes that the walls create when covering down the line options
  • Squeeze called is to activate the trap. Full on aggressive rabbit and high pressure wall.
  • Key to defence is to always communicate with your teammates, especially in a zone defence

Zone Offense - Line 1

  • 1 ready for the swing, 1 right behind, this means downfield must rotate in for the swing to the sidelines.

Zone Offense - Line 2

  • X popper in the middle gets the continuations from handlers
  • Two other receivers downfield triangulate with X to pull defenders/ get disc
  • 2 main handlers will hinge
  • 2 side handlers will provide swings

5 point box drill

  • Step into defender for forehand inside to open up swing to the break
  • Defenders need to have lateral vision on downfield cutter to stop the next possible throw instead of purely marking handlers

7 points for handlers:

  • Agressive and decisive cuts
  • Identify attacking cones
  • Open up spaces for thrower

7 points for cutters:

  • cut to break side shoulder
  • inside, around then 2 hands options.
  • Stack remember to shift back in the mean time to provide any continuation but don't bite into the attacking space.
  • Preserve the space while cutting deep so that the angle for the in cut will still be valid after the deep cut.
