There was a massive breach recently at Equifax:

Check to see if your details were in the breach:

I recommend the website Credit Karma (100% free), where you can check and monitor your credit every 7 days:
https://www.creditkarma.com/
You cannot create a Credit Karma account with security freezes in place, so I would recommend getting an account with them first.
To prevent ID theft, you can place security freezes at all four credit unions online so that no one can open credit cards, loans, etc with your information. I just did this all online in about 10 minutes, with all four. Cost: $0 Protection: 100%
Make sure you understand security freezes before signing up. No one can query your credit score with a freeze in place so any credit cards, loans, etc will be denied until the freeze is lifted.

Keep that credit score safe, it's important!
