I'm already thankful that they chose to do good with what time they had on the front stage of my childhood."

After I graduated my best friend's little brother was in a really bad car accident and was in a coma for a while... he wasn't the brightest kid to begin with and the head injury didn't help matters. One day I went over to my friend's house and walked in the door, and there was my French teacher sitting at the table with lil bro, teaching him French and just generally helping him out with things and keeping him company. He kept it up for months, and never missed an appointment and even years later lil bro could speak passable French with me (which was shocking considering he barely spoke passable English). I know it meant a lot to him, but it also gave me a new level of respect for a man who I already respected more than pretty much anyone."

I let a bad teacher ruin it for me in 8th grade and sadly even the wonderful teacher i had the following year was unable to undo the damage done by a mean spirited, spiteful teacher.
It really bothers me in hindsight, especially since i had such wonderful teachers previously. Despite 10 years being taught by loving teachers, 1 year with a bad one ruined the good opinion i had for french class. Not even the pineapple could do that before.
I could get an extra 15k a year by being bilingual, probably more."

Before I left FL, every now and then some young adult would come up to me and tell me what an impact I had had on their lives. It was always truly humbling. I remembered them all, some quicker than others, but all of them. What I quite often didn't remember is what they said I said that impacted them so much. I hear it and I'm like, "I'd never say that." Any teacher worth his salt is going to love those kids on some level and invest himself into them as they learn from him. Isn't that what teaching is, taking a part of me, and making it a part of you?"

I don't remember much from that time but I do remember one day all of my teachers came in a group and visited me in the inpatient ward. I was so happy to see them all. I had confided a lot of my troubles in them the year previous and often stayed after school very late in their classrooms because I didn't want to go home.
Now that I am 20, I can only imagine how heart broken they all must have been. Thank you to all the teachers out there who have let a kid use their classroom as a safe haven."

Eventually I had to repeat the grade because I got so far behind. Only a few of the teachers and basically none of the administration were understanding. That's what happens when you have 1000 kids in each grade, the teachers often "can't make exceptions" (read: don't care enough to make exceptions) even if you really want to not fail."

I was very lucky that I ‘only’ came away with a few fractures - fractured skull, hip, and ankle. I couldn’t walk properly for a few weeks and had issues with dizziness and balance problems for over a year afterwards due to the skull fracture.
Anyway, I called my employer first thing in the morning the day after the accident. I told them what had happened and how I was injured. I didn’t get an ‘are you ok?’ or a ‘hope you heal and get better soon’ - instead I got a frosty silence and a sigh, followed by ‘so I take it you’re going to be late for work today. What time will you be in?’ I was gobsmacked.
To add insult to injury, I was a temp at that company - although I had worked there for almost 2 years - so I didn’t get sick pay. I only allowed myself 2 weeks off, which was as long as it took for me to be able to hobble (with assistance) and lift my head up without feeling like I was spinning on a playground roundabout.
After two weeks I went back into work. Still very visibly injured. I went to my usual desk only to find someone else in my spot. I asked the manager what was going on and she told me ‘oh you’ve moved departments now, you’re on QA.’
Wonderful. They’d moved me to the one apartment they knew I didn’t want to be on. They’d suggested this move in the past as they needed more QA people but we were ‘allowed’ to turn down the offer and choose a different as long as there were availabilities elsewhere. Clearly they saw my absence as an excellent opportunity to move me without a choice.
And then... to add shock and frustration to the insult and injury, a few days after my return our whole department was called into a meeting with the team manager, who looked distraught and had clearly been crying.
‘I’ve got bad news. I’d rather you hear it from me rather than from rumours and gossip. It’s about Katie and Kelly.’
Katie & Kelly (not their real names!) were sisters who both worked on that dept. They’d started about 3 months before I did, which meant they were there early enough to have been given a permanent job.
We all thought something terrible had happened, people were tearing up, I was convinced manager was going to say one or both of them had died.
‘Katie and Kelly had an accident this morning...’
GASP we definitely think they’re dead now.
‘Their car broke down on the way in this morning. It was on a busy road so they got out and stood on the verge, a few metres from the road. But Katie, who was driving, left her car door open. A lorry came past and didn’t change lanes in time, it drove into the open car door and and ripped it off the car. It’s so lucky they had already got out and into a safe. I don’t want to imagine what would’ve happened had they still been in the car.’ (More tears)
Most of my colleagues seemed to feel the same way I did - the girls were fine, no one was hurt, why the tears?
Manager told us the girls would be off for ‘at least two weeks’ so that they could relax and come to terms with their experience. ‘We’re still going to mark them as here, that way they won’t have to lose any pay.’
She added that she would be starting a collection box in the aim to raise funds for a new car or to fix the broken one.
Meanwhile I still had visible cuts/bruises and a very obvious limp and I didn’t get a ‘get well soon’ card, or even a text, whilst I was off, nor did anyone mention it when I came back in. This in itself hadn’t bothered me before, I’d just told myself ‘it’s probably the same for everyone.’
When the ‘get well soon’ card was passed around with a jar already containing about £100 worth of notes I couldn’t bring myself to sign it."

We tend not to want to "waste" resources on people we feel are a lost cause, like drug-addicted people, those with mental illnesses, the poor, the homeless, that sort of thing.

Think of the last time someone said to you "Excuse me, can you tell me where...?"

Everyone can think of this instance because it costs us next to nothing to help someone this way, and we still gain all the happy feel good benefits of having helped someone. I've been homeless twice, and when you're forced into that position you learn very quickly that everyone tells you "let me know if there's anything I can do to help," but few people will actually do anything when you require it of them, unless they can do so without sacrificing anything significant on their part.
The whole reason a photo of any teacher going to extra mile to do their job is considered at all exceptional on this site in the first place is because Iran is an enemy of the country most redditors hail from. Iranians are the other, and to see them simply being human is an unusual depiction of them in US media.
Certainly there will always be people who have an urge to help others, but it will always be easier to choose not to help someone who isn't in your face, literally begging for your assistance, and sometimes even then it's too much to expect them to forfeit anything to actually help them."

And even when they do, you still spend 90% of the day alone. The beds get very uncomfortable. You can't shower after surgery, so you spend a few days gathering filth on your body and smelling like death. When you are able to shower, you have to cover your surgical site with plastic, making it awkward as fuck. You have a tube up your dick constantly vacuuming your bladder, that pulls a little every time you move, and pinches like hell. You have to wear inflating leg braces while in bed to keep your muscles stimulated while not walking. You are tangled in cords and tubes, from the leg braces and the IV machine. The IV machine can't seem to go five minutes without beeping, and when they don't come, it just gets louder. You fumble around it, looking for a silence button, only to fuck something up and get lightly scolded by the nurse. Days and nights become more meaningless the longer you stay, so you just sleep whenever you get tired, be it 2pm or 2am. If you do end up sleeping at night, you get awoken at 4-5am every morning to get stuck so they can test your blood. All this, and I haven't even mentioned the actual pain from surgery recovery. The only part that is good is getting unlimited ice cream at any hour."

Or at least they wouldn’t use the Arabic word for it.
I at least have never encountered falafel at any Iranian restaurant.
EDIT: I'm so happy I kick-started a conversation about Iranian food, if you haven't tried it yet, GO!"
