Convert MySQL to Postres

What have we done

Create dump

mysqldump --compatible=postgresql --default-character-set=utf8 -r databasename.mysql -u root databasename

Convert the dump into something that is readable by postgres

There is a python script in db/db.py which helps you with the conversion:

python db.py databasename_mysql.sql databasename_pg.sql

Replacing mysql with pg gem

We replaced the gem and changed the database.yml accordingly

Things to look for

Boolean fields can be a hassle. The culprit is the conversion script that drops the default values. So we add them manually with a migration:

rails g migration add_sane_defaults_to_boolean_columns_for_postgres

Double quoted strings in SQL

Postgres is a little bit picky with double quoted strings:

scope :finished_on, -> (date) { where('state = "finished" AND finished_at >= ? AND finished_at <= ?', date.beginning_of_day, date.end_of_day) }

Easy way is to pass it inside the scope via a paramter:

scope :finished_on, -> (date) { where('state = ? AND finished_at >= ? AND finished_at <= ?', "finished", date.beginning_of_day, date.end_of_day) }
