Toast of Berkeley Videos

Videos of speeches each week are recorded and posted to the Toast of Berkeley YouTube channel. Additionally, individual table topics responses may be recorded at the request of the speaker, though they are not recorded by default to encourage people to take the risk of speaking.

All videos are uploaded to YouTube under the "toastofberkeley2009" YouTube account (password is available from s.mackesey@gmail.com), with "Unlisted" status. An unlisted video is a video that will not show up in search results but that is accessible to anyone with the link (Google account not required). “Private” videos are different. Toast of Berkeley videos should be posted as unlisted, not private.

How to Post Videos

Step 1: Record the Videos

The default Camera app on a decent smartphone should do the trick. Use 1080p recording for best quality.

Step 2: Upload the Videos to YouTube

YouTube makes this really easy. Download the YouTube app on your phone and use the upload functionality to upload your videos. Make sure you select "Unlisted" from the privacy settings when uploading, and are logged in using the toastofberkeley2009 account. You should also make sure that you are using YouTube as Toast of Berkeley (which will require you being signed in with toastofberkeley2009) and not directly with the gmail address account. YouTube should prompt you for this when signing in, otherwise you can access this option by going to "Switch Account". This is a subtle distinction; Toast of Berkeley is an organizational YouTube channel to which toastofberkeley2009 has access, while toastofberkeley2009 has its own Google user youtube channel (which we do not use). If you upload the videos directly to *toastofberkeley2009's channel, it will create confusion since the rest of the videos are under Toast of Berkeley. Please contact s.mackesey@gmail.com if you are confused by this or unsure how to upload.

You will also want to do this on wifi, since you are uploading uncompressed video files, which are very large and will swamp your data plan. YouTube will handle the compression. Title the videos with this scheme: <DATESTAMP> <FIRSTNAME> <LASTNAME>. DATESTAMP should have the form yearyearmonthmonthdayday, e.g. "140306 abraham lincoln" for Abraham Lincoln speaking on March 6th, 2014.

NOTE: If things went awry during the recording process, you may want to perform some basic video editing. There are free Android (and almost certainly iOS) apps available for this that will let you say, trim the ends of the video.

Congrats, you're done! :)
