  • What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?

Empathy played a huge role in my life working as a veterinary technician. I spent most of my day empathizing with clients who had brought their animals into the Emergency Service, or with the animals I was taking care of in the ICU. A lot of my coworkers suffered from Compassion Fatigue because we were constantly encountering awful situations. It wasn't uncommon to have a shift where you were crying with clients, or crying in your car at the end of a terrible day. I am hoping that there will be a lot less crying in my career as a software developer. Empathy helped me be a better vet tech, but I think exercising that empathy "muscle" helped me in my personal life as well. I have become a better friend and wife, becoming more aware of how other people are feeling in my life and putting myself in their shoes instead of just thinking about how their issues were affecting me. I've always been a good listener but now I try to actually empathiz

Mod 0

  1. When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

Practicing is probably my most successful tool for acheiving goals. Other helpful things I've done before is coming up with a schedule, making to-do lists, and again, just practicing even when I don't feel like it. I have been trying to come up with a new daily schedule that I will use while I'm Turing, which will include what time I get up, when I work on homework, when I look over the next day's lesson, when I will exercise and when I will relax/have down-time. I'm trying to work on adjusting my sleep schedule a little bit so that I can be awake/alert for more of the daytime and less of a night-owl now that mod 0 is over. I've already made some to-do lists for my pre-work. Now I just need to get to practicing, making sure that I do some coding everyday. I am considering doing the #100daysofcode challenge
